October 30 Devotional: See With What Large Letters I Am Writing

經文

Scripture

“See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh.”

1. Why Did Paul Write With Large Letters?

Paul usually dictated his letters to a scribe, but at the end of this letter he wrote this section with his own hand.

The “large letters” may emphasize the importance of the closing message or relate to Paul’s eyesight; either way, they show his seriousness and urgency toward the Galatian believers.

It also functions like a handwritten signature, assuring believers that the letter truly came from Paul and was not forged by false teachers.

2. The Motives of the False Teachers: Appearance, Safety, and Boasting

Paul exposes the real motives of those demanding that the Galatians be circumcised.

1. Wanting to Make a Good Showing

They wanted to appear successful, devout, and influential in religious circles by having Gentile believers circumcised.

2. Fearing Persecution for the Cross

The cross declares that people cannot be saved by the Law, circumcision, or religious performance; this message provokes opposition and persecution.

To avoid persecution, these teachers compromised the gospel by adding circumcision to Christ’s salvation.

3. Wanting to Boast in Others’ Flesh

They did not truly keep the Law themselves, yet wanted others circumcised so they could count others’ compliance as their own achievement and boast.

3. The Cross Versus Outward Religion

Paul presents two paths here:

The Way of the CrossThe Way of Outward Religion
Saved by Christ’s graceProving oneself by circumcision, Law, or performance
Willing to suffer for the gospelCompromising to avoid persecution
Glory given to ChristGlory taken for oneself
True repentance and faithOutward compliance and religious achievement

The way of the cross does not seek to please people or make human praise its ultimate goal.

4. “Outward Religion” in the Church Today

Similar temptations may appear in today’s church:

  • Pursuing ministry titles, platforms, numbers, or praise.
  • Using spiritual language to cover control, envy, or self-promotion.
  • Not daring to uphold gospel truth for fear of criticism, exclusion, or losing status.
  • Treating others’ compliance, giving, or participation as proof of one’s ministry success.

5. A Psychological Perspective: Why People Seek Outward Approval

People often pursue outward approval because they lack inner security.

They may fear:

  • Rejection.
  • Losing status or influence.
  • Others’ criticism.
  • Not being important enough.

Therefore, they use achievements, titles, religious performance, or others’ compliance to prove their worth.

But the gospel tells us that our worth is not found in human praise but in Christ’s love and acceptance.

6. How Can We Examine Ourselves Today?

1. What Is My Motivation for Serving?

Do I serve to glorify Christ or to gain others’ approval?

2. Do I Fear the Cost of the Cross?

When upholding truth brings opposition, misunderstanding, or loss, am I still willing to be faithful?

3. Do I Boast in Others’ Compliance?

Do I treat others’ participation, giving, or change as tools to prove my importance?

4. Do I Live Out Genuine Repentance?

I must not only outwardly follow rules but inwardly pursue holiness and love through the Spirit.

7. How Can We Practice This Today?

1. Choose to Please God

Before deciding, ask: “Will this glorify God or glorify me?”

2. Do Not Make Human Praise the Goal

Receive praise with gratitude but do not depend on it; examine criticism but do not let it define you.

3. Be Willing to Pay the Cost of the Gospel

When truth is unpopular, uphold it with gentleness and love.

4. Give Glory to Christ

Do not boast in your achievements or in others’ compliance; boast only in the cross of Christ.

8. Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding me through Paul’s handwritten words that the gospel is not based on appearance, circumcision, the Law, or human praise, but on the cross of Christ.

Lord, shine Your light into my life and show me whether I seek human approval in ministry, witness, or daily faith.

Remove my pride, fear, and self-promotion.

Keep me from fearing persecution for the cross, and from boasting in others’ compliance or achievements.

Help me boast only in the cross of Christ and witness to You with authenticity, humility, and love in family, church, work, and society.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

結語

Conclusion

Galatians 6:11–13 reminds us that true faith is not outward religious performance but glorying in the cross of Christ.

Therefore, do not live for human praise, nor compromise the gospel out of fear of persecution. Boast only in the cross of Christ, and let your life truly glorify God.
