November 2 Devotional: The Son of Man Walking Among the Lampstands

經文
Scripture

Revelation 1:9-20

I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

On the Lord’s Day I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet saying, “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.”

Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands.

And in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.

The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.

In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this.

As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”

  1. John’s Situation: A Brother in Tribulation

John calls himself a brother and shares with believers in tribulation, kingdom, and patient endurance.

He was exiled to the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

This reminds us that following Christ does not mean life will be free of difficulty; rather, believers may face pressure, loneliness, and persecution because of faithfulness.

2. Hearing the Lord’s Voice on the Lord’s Day

On the Lord’s Day, John was in the Spirit and heard a loud voice like a trumpet.

Even on a lonely island, in tribulation and restriction, the Lord still speaks to His servant.

This reminds us that God can speak to us in any situation; what matters is whether we are willing to be quiet, listen, and obey.

3. The Seven Golden Lampstands: The Church Before the Lord

The seven golden lampstands represent the seven churches.

A lampstand exists to give light; the church’s mission is to bear witness to the light of Christ in the world.

The church is defined not by attendance, buildings, wealth, reputation, or ministry scale, but by whether it faithfully shines for the Lord.

4. The Son of Man in the Midst of the Lampstands

John saw one like a son of man standing in the midst of the lampstands.

This shows that Christ is not distant from the church; He is personally present with it, observing, knowing, and governing it.

The true center of the church is not leaders, systems, forms of gathering, or visible achievements, but Christ Himself.

5. The Glorious Appearance of the Son of Man

John saw the Son of Man clothed in a long robe with a golden sash, with hair white like wool or snow, eyes like flames of fire, feet like refined bronze, a voice like many waters, and a face like the sun shining in full strength.

These images reveal Christ’s holiness, authority, purity, discernment, steadfastness, power, and glory.

He is not a weak, distant, or passive Lord, but a glorious, reigning Lord who sees the church and speaks to it.

6. Seven Stars in His Right Hand and a Sword From His Mouth

Christ holds the seven stars in His right hand, representing the angels of the seven churches.

This shows that the leaders and messengers of the churches are held in Christ’s hand; they are not the ultimate authority, for Christ is.

The sharp two-edged sword coming from His mouth represents the authority and judging power of His word.

The church needs to hear Christ’s word, not merely human voices, trends, or personal preferences.

7. John’s Response: Falling Down and Fear

When John saw the glorious Lord, he fell at His feet as though dead.

A true spiritual encounter is not casual, careless, or boastful, but reverent, humble, and aware of one’s limitations.

When a person truly sees Christ’s glory, he understands his need for grace, mercy, and renewal.

8. “Fear Not”: The Comfort of the Risen Lord

The Lord laid His right hand on John and said, “Fear not.”

This is the comfort of the risen Lord to His suffering servant.

Jesus says He is the First and the Last, the Living One; He died and is alive forevermore.

He holds the keys of Death and Hades, showing that death, failure, suffering, and uncertainty do not have the final word over believers.

9. Write What You Have Seen, What Is, and What Will Take Place

The Lord commanded John to write what he had seen, what is, and what will take place after this.

Revelation is not only about the distant future but also about present church life.

Believers must be faithful now and face the future with hope.

10. The Mystery of the Lampstands and Stars

The Lord explained that the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

This reminds church leaders and believers that we are stewards, not the ultimate rulers.

Faithfulness is our mission; controlling everything is not.

11. How Can We Respond Today?

First, ask who is the true center of the church. Does the church honor Christ as Lord, listen to His word, and shine for Him?

Second, do not replace the Lord’s presence with visible achievements. Attendance, property, online traffic, leader reputation, or ministry results are not the final evidence of His presence.

Third, hear the Lord’s comfort amid pressure. When you are lonely, weary, misunderstood, or afraid, slowly meditate on “Fear not.”

Fourth, give the burden of control to Christ. If you carry responsibility in church, family, or work, remember that Christ walks among the lampstands; you are called only to be faithful.

Fifth, let the Lord’s word examine you. Ask Him to shine light on the corners you avoid and to remember your faithfulness that no one else sees.

12. Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding me through Revelation that the Lord Jesus Christ walks among the lampstands, knowing, observing, and governing His church.

Lord, keep me from measuring the church by attendance, achievements, wealth, reputation, or ministry scale; help me ask whether Christ is honored as Lord among us.

Help me hear Your voice in tribulation, loneliness, and uncertainty: “Fear not.”

Help me remember that You are the First and the Last, the Living One; You died, are alive forevermore, and hold the keys of Death and Hades.

Help me be faithful in church, family, and work, without trying to control everything.

Walk among us, shine light on the corners we avoid, remember faithfulness no one else sees, and make Christ the true center of the church.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

結語
Conclusion

Revelation 1:9-20 reminds us that Christ walks among the lampstands; He knows the church, governs the church, and speaks to the church.

He said to the fearful John, “Fear not.”

Therefore, do not let attendance, achievements, pressure, fear, or uncertainty become the center of the church. Look to the risen Lord who walks among the lampstands and holds the keys of Death and Hades.
