Revelation 1:1-8

The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw. Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.

John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

  1. The Beginning of Revelation: The Revelation of Jesus Christ

Revelation is not a book meant to produce fear or date-setting; it is “the revelation of Jesus Christ.” God revealed coming events to Jesus, Jesus made them known through an angel to John, and John bore witness to the churches. Therefore, the center of Revelation is not end-time details but Jesus Christ: He is the source, content, and hope of the revelation.

2. Read, Hear, Keep: A Blessed Life

Verse 3 says that those who read, hear, and keep the words of this prophecy are blessed. This is not merely an invitation to be curious about the future but a call to respond to God’s word with obedience. The blessing of Revelation is not in knowing secrets but in remaining faithful to Christ amid turmoil and persecution.

3. Three Titles of Jesus

Verse 5 describes Jesus with three titles, each deeply significant for suffering churches.

First, Jesus is the faithful witness. He faithfully witnessed to the Father, refusing to compromise even when facing rejection, misunderstanding, and death. Believers are also called to be faithful witnesses to Christ in family, workplace, school, and society.

Second, Jesus is the firstborn from the dead. He did not merely rise; He is the first to conquer death and enter new life. Therefore, death is not the end for believers; those who follow Christ have the hope of resurrection.

Third, Jesus is the ruler of the kings of the earth. He is King of kings; no earthly power, system, or leader can surpass His sovereignty. When the world is loud and powers press in, believers must first see that the true ruler is not any human authority but the risen Lord.

4. He Loved Us and Freed Us by His Blood

Verse 5 says that Jesus loves us and has freed us from our sins by His blood. This reminds us that Christian identity is not determined by performance, achievement, status, or others’ evaluation, but by Christ’s love and redemption. God does not love us because we are holy; because He loves us, He freed us through Christ’s blood.

5. Made a Kingdom and Priests

Verse 6 says Jesus made us a kingdom and priests to His God and Father. This does not call us to pursue power but to witness to God’s reign in the world through servant-hearted living.

Being priests includes praying for the world, bringing people to God, bringing God’s word to people, and witnessing to holiness, mercy, and truth in daily life. Therefore, our time, abilities, positions, and resources are not only for ourselves but for serving Christ and His kingdom.

6. He Is Coming: Every Eye Will See Him

Verse 7 says Jesus will come with the clouds, and every eye will see Him. This reminds us that history is not directionless or determined merely by human power or algorithms; it will culminate in Christ’s return. For those who faithfully follow Christ, this is hope; for those who reject Him, it is judgment.

7. Alpha and Omega: He Is the Almighty

Verse 8 says the Lord God is the Alpha and Omega, who is, who was, and who is to come, the Almighty. Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, showing that God is the beginning, course, and end of history.

When the world tells us to fear, compromise, chase success, or abandon hope, Revelation reminds us that the Almighty God still reigns.

8. How Can We Respond Today?

First, examine the center of your life. Ask yourself: Are work performance, income, others’ evaluation, family expectations, or the pursuit of security replacing Christ?

Second, remain faithful before power. Under pressure from government, workplace, family, school, media, or church, witness to Christ with truth, love, and gentleness.

Third, seek obedience, not only help. Do not treat faith only as a tool for solving problems; ask, “Lord, how do You want me to serve You here?”

Fourth, live as a priest. Pray for those around you, bring people to God, and witness to His mercy and truth in daily life.

Fifth, look quietly to Christ amid the noise. Read Scripture and pray daily, letting God’s voice become more real than the world’s noise.

9. Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding me through Revelation that Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

Lord, when the world is loud and power, fear, comparison, and expectations seek to take the center of my heart, turn my eyes back to You.

Help me believe that You rose from the dead, that You still reign, and that You will come again.

Keep me from treating faith only as a tool for help; make me willing to be Your servant, kingdom, and priest.

Use my time, abilities, position, and resources to witness to Your kingdom, bring people to You, and live out Your mercy and truth in family, church, work, and society.

Lord, when I am afraid, impatient, or tempted to compromise for safety, remind me that You are the Alpha and Omega, the Almighty.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.
