經文
Scripture
“But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. Brothers, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.”
1. Paul’s Final Declaration: Boast Only in the Cross
At the close of the letter, Paul centers the whole message of Galatians once again on the cross of Christ.
He does not boast in his apostleship, sufferings, theological knowledge, or ministry achievements, but only in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In the Roman world, the cross was a symbol of shame and punishment; but for Paul, it became the symbol of salvation, victory, and glory.
2. What Does “The World Has Been Crucified to Me” Mean?
Paul says that through the cross, the world has been crucified to him, and he to the world.
This does not mean Christians should hate the world or withdraw completely from society.
“The world” here refers to the value system opposed to God: a way of life centered on achievement, status, religious performance, human praise, and self-salvation.
The cross no longer lets these values govern Paul; he no longer seeks identity, acceptance, or glory from the world.

]
[
\text{Before the cross: I define myself by achievement, performance, and others’ approval.}
]
[
\text{十字架之後:我在基督裡已被接納,所以不再需要靠世界證明自己。}
]
[
\text{After the cross: I am accepted in Christ, so I no longer need the world to prove my worth.}
]
3. Circumcision Is Nothing; New Creation Is Everything
Verse 15 says that neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but a new creation.
This does not mean physical signs or cultural identity have no meaning; rather, they cannot become the basis for salvation, acceptance, or belonging to God’s people.
What truly matters is that a person becomes a new creation in Christ.
A new creation has a new heart, new desires, new relationships, and a new direction of life.
This new life is not manufactured by the Law but accomplished by the Spirit in Christ.
4. Who Are “The Israel of God”?
Verse 16 says, “Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, and upon the Israel of God.”
“This rule” refers to the principle of verses 14–15: boasting only in the cross and becoming a new creation in Christ.
God’s people are defined not by ancestry, circumcision, or religious performance, but by faith in Christ and new life in Him.
Therefore, whether Jew or Gentile, all who trust Christ and live by the Spirit receive God’s peace and mercy.
5. What Are “The Marks of Jesus”?
Verse 17 says Paul bears on his body the marks of Jesus.
This most likely refers to the scars Paul received from persecution while preaching the gospel.
The false teachers used circumcision as a mark of religious identity; Paul bore scars from suffering for Christ as marks of faithfulness.
This reminds us that the true mark of a Christian is not an outward religious label but a life willing to pay the cost for Christ and the gospel.
6. The Closing Blessing: Grace With Your Spirit
Verse 18 says, “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.”
Paul ends with grace because the message of Galatians is that people are saved not by the Law, circumcision, or works, but by God’s grace through faith in Christ.
This grace not only saves but also sustains believers as they live by the Spirit each day.
7. The Summary Message of Galatians
Galatians can be summarized in this message:
[
\text{因信稱義} \rightarrow \text{得兒子名分} \rightarrow \text{靠聖靈生活} \rightarrow \text{彼此相愛} \rightarrow \text{只誇十字架}
]
[
\text{Justification by faith} \rightarrow \text{Adoption as sons} \rightarrow \text{Living by the Spirit} \rightarrow \text{Loving one another} \rightarrow \text{Boasting only in the cross}
]

Dear Heavenly Father,

Make me a new creation in Christ, walking by the Spirit and bearing the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Help me serve one another in love, bear one another’s burdens, do good to all, and be willing to pay the cost for the gospel in family, church, work, and society.
