October 28 Devotional: Carry One Another’s Burdens

經文

Scripture

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load. One who is taught the word must share all good things with the one who teaches.”

1. How This Passage Connects to the Previous Verses

Galatians 6:1 says that spiritual people should restore someone caught in sin with gentleness.

Verse 6:2 further says believers must carry one another’s burdens.

This continues Spirit-led living in community: not looking only to oneself but supporting one another.

2. What Are “Burdens”?

The “burdens” in verse 2 refer to weights too heavy for a person to carry alone, including illness, financial hardship, emotional pain, temptation, guilt, family pressure, or spiritual struggle.

This does not mean we take responsibility for everything in another person’s life; rather, when someone’s burden exceeds what he can bear, we offer help.

3. What Is “The Law of Christ”?

Verse 2 says that carrying one another’s burdens fulfills the law of Christ.

“The law of Christ” is not a new set of rules but a way of life centered on love.

Christ himself is the model of burden-bearing: He carried the weight of our sin, shame, and death.

Therefore, when believers carry one another’s burdens, they reflect Christ’s love in daily life.

4. Verses 3–5: Avoid Self-Deception and Comparison

1. Do Not Think You Are Something

Verse 3 says that if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

This does not mean people have no value; it warns us not to become proud because of gifts, achievements, knowledge, or spiritual performance.

2. Test Your Own Work

Verse 4 says each person should test his own work.

We easily compare ourselves with others: gifts, achievements, godliness, ministry, family, or wealth.

But Paul says true boasting should be in one’s own faithfulness before God, not in being better than others.

3. Each Must Carry His Own Load

Verse 5 says each person must carry his own load.

The “load” here differs from the “burdens” in verse 2.

The “burdens” in verse 2 are crushing weights requiring help; the “load” in verse 5 refers to each person’s own responsibility, duty, and accountability before God.

Therefore, this passage is not contradictory but balanced:

[
\text{別人無法承受的重擔,要互相擔當。}
]

[
\text{Burdens too heavy for one person should be shared.}
]

[
\text{自己應盡的責任,不可推給別人。}
]

[
\text{One’s own responsibility should not be shifted to others.}
]

5. Verse 6: Share Good Things With Teachers

Verse 6 says that those taught the word must share all good things with those who teach.

“Share” carries the sense of fellowship and joint participation.

This includes:

  • Praying for pastors and teachers.
  • Respecting and encouraging them.
  • Providing practical support when needed.
  • Responding to their ministry with gratitude and generosity.

6. A Psychological Perspective: Mutual Support and Healthy Boundaries

Carrying one another’s burdens requires both love and wisdom.

Healthy support includes:

  • Listening without rushing to give answers.
  • Accompanying without controlling.
  • Offering practical help rather than only spiritual slogans.
  • Respecting the other person’s pace and boundaries.
  • Knowing when professional help is needed.

At the same time, we must discern:

  • Which are “burdens” others can help carry.
  • Which are one’s own “loads” that must be carried personally.

7. How Can We Carry Others’ Burdens Today?

1. Take Initiative to Greet

Greet those who are sick, lonely, unemployed, caregivers, or suffering.

2. Offer Practical Help

For example: bring a meal, provide transportation, care for children, accompany someone to a medical appointment, help with job searching, or provide resources.

3. Listen and Pray

Do not rush to comment; listen first and pray for the person.

4. Encourage Without Comparing

Appreciate others’ gifts rather than envy them; give thanks for their progress rather than feeling threatened.

5. Support Those Who Teach the Word

Pray for pastors, mentors, and spiritual elders, and support them practically when appropriate.

8. Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for carrying my sin and burdens through Christ, and for placing me in the church community where we can support one another.

Lord, remove my self-deception, pride, and comparison.

Keep me from boasting in my gifts or achievements, and from looking down on others because of their weakness.

Give me a sensitive heart to see the burdens of those around me and a willingness to carry them through practical action, prayer, and companionship.

Help me also faithfully carry my own responsibilities and not shift my duties to others.

Help me become a blessing to others in family, church, work, and society, and learn to share all good things with those who teach.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

結語

Conclusion

Galatians 6:2–6 reminds us that the Christian life is not isolated but lived in community, where believers carry one another’s burdens and support one another.

Therefore, do not focus only on your own burdens, nor shift your responsibilities to others. Rely on the Spirit and become a blessing to others with love and wisdom.
