經文
Scripture
“Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.”
— Galatians 6:1
1. How This Verse Connects to the Previous Passage
Galatians 5 teaches believers to walk by the Spirit and bear the fruit of the Spirit; chapter 6 applies this life to the church community.
Verse 6:1 does not tell us to criticize, shame, or distance ourselves when we see someone sin; it tells us to “restore him.”
This is a concrete expression of Spirit-led living in community: neither indifference nor indulgence, but helping a fallen person rise again through love and gentleness.
2. What Does “Caught in Any Transgression” Mean?
“Caught in any transgression” does not refer to deliberate, stubborn, long-term unrepentant sin.
It is more like a person being tripped by sin and trapped in a place he never expected, perhaps not knowing how to get out.
This verse reminds us:
- People fall, and people in the church community also fall.
- A fallen person needs restoration, not humiliation.
- We must not assume we will never fall.
3. Who Are the “Spiritual” People?
“Spiritual people” does not mean those who think they are holier or more qualified to judge others.
It refers to those led by the Spirit, bearing the Spirit’s fruit, and willing to submit to God.
Spiritual people do not stand above the fallen to judge them; they draw near, support them, and help them return to Christ.
4. What Does “Restore” Mean?
The word “restore” carries the sense of mending, repairing, and setting right, like repairing a torn fishing net or resetting a dislocated bone.
This reminds us:
- The goal of restoration is not to prove oneself right but to help the other person recover.
- Restoration is not public shaming but private, patient, wise help.
- Restoration includes admonition, teaching, prayer, companionship, and sometimes seeking church leaders or professional help.
5. Why Restore With a Spirit of Gentleness?
“Gentleness” is one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:23).
Gentleness is not weakness or avoiding truth; it is strength under control, treating people with respect and love.
We restore with gentleness because:
- A fallen person is already wounded and needs healing, not more harm.
- We ourselves have been weak and may one day need others to restore us.
- Gentleness makes a person willing to repent; harshness often makes a person defensive, hidden, or withdrawn.
6. Why Must We Watch Ourselves?
Paul says, “Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.”
This does not tell us to fear helping others; it reminds us that when facing another person’s sin, we also face two dangers.
1. The Danger of Pride
We may feel superior because someone else has fallen, forgetting that we too are sinners saved by grace.
2. The Danger of Being Tempted by the Same Sin
We may think we are strong enough, only to fall in a similar temptation.
Therefore, before restoring others, examine yourself:
- Am I carrying anger, revenge, or a sense of superiority?
- Do I have similar weaknesses or unaddressed sin?
- Am I willing to let others restore me with the same gentleness?
7. A Psychological Perspective: How to Restore Someone Healthily
Healthy restoration is not control, shame, or taking God’s place as judge.
It includes:
- Choose an appropriate time and private setting.
- Listen first to understand what happened and how the person feels.
- Use “I” language to express concern rather than attacking language.
- Separate behavior from personhood: address the behavior that needs to change without denying the person’s worth.
- Offer concrete, practical next steps.
- Respect the person’s pace while not avoiding necessary accountability.
8. How Can We Practice This Today?
1. Pray for the Fallen Person
Do not first gossip or criticize; pray for him first.
2. Approach With Gentleness
Greet, listen, and accompany rather than interrogate.
3. Speak Truth, But With Love
Do not hide the issue, but do not express it in a shaming way.
4. Watch Your Own Heart
Ask God to keep you from becoming proud because of another’s fall, and from being tempted by the same sin.
5. Receive Restoration From Others
When others lovingly point out your problems, do not immediately become defensive; listen humbly.
9. Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for reminding me through Galatians that the church is not a place for judging people but a community of mutual restoration and support.
Lord, when I see a brother or sister fall, remove my pride, criticism, and sense of superiority.
Give me a gentle heart to restore people to You with love, patience, and wisdom.
Keep me from boasting because of another’s fall, and from being tempted by the same sin.
Help me become someone willing to restore others and willing to be restored in family, church, work, and society.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.
