October 25 Devotional: The Works of the Flesh

經文

Scripture

“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

1. How This Passage Connects to the Previous Verses

Galatians 5:16–18 says believers must walk by the Spirit, because the flesh and the Spirit are opposed to each other.

Verses 19–21 then describe concretely what kinds of actions and relationships emerge when people live according to the flesh.

Paul is not merely telling us to avoid certain outward behaviors; he wants us to see how “the flesh” penetrates our sexuality, religion, emotions, relationships, and self-control.

2. What Is “The Flesh”?

“The flesh” does not refer to the body itself but to the self-centered, God-opposing, uncontrolled desires and tendencies within fallen human nature.

The characteristics of the flesh are:

  • Self-centeredness.
  • Pursuing immediate gratification.
  • Opposing God’s will.
  • Harming oneself, harming others, and destroying relationships.

The works of the flesh are not occasional mistakes but a continual direction of life. [1103][1113]

3. Four Categories of the Works of the Flesh

Paul’s list is not exhaustive; he uses “and things like these” to show that these are representative examples. [1103][1104]

1. Sexual Sins

  • Sexual immorality.
  • Impurity.
  • Sensuality or debauchery.

These sins turn the body, emotions, and relationships into tools for satisfying selfish desire.

2. Religious Sins

  • Idolatry.
  • Sorcery.

Idolatry is not only bowing to idols; it also includes placing money, power, reputation, relationships, comfort, or oneself in God’s place.

3. Relational and Emotional Sins

  • Enmity.
  • Strife.
  • Jealousy.
  • Fits of anger.
  • Selfish ambition.
  • Dissensions.
  • Divisions.
  • Envy.

These sins are especially related to church community.

A person may appear strict in sexual morality yet be full of envy, anger, comparison, criticism, and division in the church.

4. Loss of Control and Excess

  • Drunkenness.
  • Orgies or carousing.

These behaviors show that a person is governed by desire and has lost self-control.

4. What Does “Will Not Inherit the Kingdom of God” Mean?

The warning in verse 21 is very serious: “Those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

This does not mean that a believer who sins once immediately loses salvation, nor that a person who occasionally falls is necessarily condemned.

It means that if a person continually, habitually, and unrepentantly lives in the works of the flesh, that direction of life shows that he is not truly governed by the Spirit.

Therefore, this passage does not lead us to despair but calls us to examine ourselves, repent, turn to Christ, and live a new life through the Spirit. [1103][1108]

5. A Psychological Perspective: How the Flesh Works

The flesh often follows common patterns:

[
\text{內在缺乏} \rightarrow \text{錯誤渴望} \rightarrow \text{失控行為} \rightarrow \text{關係破壞} \rightarrow \text{更深的羞恥}
]

[
\text{Inner emptiness} \rightarrow \text{Wrong desire} \rightarrow \text{Loss of control} \rightarrow \text{Broken relationships} \rightarrow \text{Deeper shame}
]

例如:

For example:

  • A person feels lonely and fills the emptiness with pornography, alcohol, or shopping.
  • A person fears rejection and protects himself through control, anger, or people-pleasing.
  • A person feels unaffirmed and elevates himself through envy, comparison, or criticism.

To break this cycle, we need:

  • Acknowledge real struggles rather than hide them.
  • Identify the fear, shame, or emptiness behind them.
  • Establish healthy boundaries and alternative actions.
  • Seek community support, counseling, or professional help.

6. How Can We Examine Ourselves Today?

1. Examine My Relationships

Am I engaged in enmity, envy, comparison, criticism, division, or factionalism?

2. Examine My Self-Control

Am I controlled by pornography, alcohol, shopping, entertainment, food, my phone, or uncontrolled emotions?

3. Examine What I Worship

Have I placed money, achievement, reputation, relationships, comfort, or myself above God?

4. Examine My Repentance

Do I only feel guilty after sinning without truly turning to God, seeking forgiveness, and change?

5. Choose One Act of Obedience

For example: apologize to someone, remove a source of temptation, seek accountability, pray for someone hurt, or replace envy with service.

7. Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for reminding me through Galatians that the works of the flesh are real and dangerous. Shine Your light into my life and show me where lust, idols, anger, envy, comparison, division, or loss of control still influence me.

Lord, I do not want to remain controlled by the flesh. Forgive me, cleanse me, and renew me.

Keep me from relying on willpower alone; help me walk by the Spirit daily. When I am tempted, give me watchfulness, wisdom, and strength to turn to You early.

Help me live out love, holiness, self-control, and mutual service in family, church, work, and society, rather than enmity, envy, division, and indulgence.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

結語

Conclusion

Galatians 5:19–21 reminds us that the works of the flesh are not merely outward behaviors but the exposure of inner direction and relational patterns.

Therefore, do not only ask, “Which major sins have I not committed?” Ask also, “Am I still controlled by the desires, anger, envy, and division of the flesh?”

May we not hide or despair, but come to Christ in repentance and live a new life through the Spirit.
