經文
Scripture
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
1. Why Does Paul Speak of the Spirit Here?
Galatians 5:16–18 continues the earlier teaching on freedom, love, and serving one another.
Paul has just said that Christian freedom is not license for the flesh but serving one another through love.
The question now is: How can we do this?
Paul’s answer is not “try harder to keep rules,” but “walk by the Spirit.”
This is the heart of Galatians 5: Christians overcome not by the Law but by living a new life through the Spirit.
2. What Does “Flesh” Mean?
“Flesh” does not refer to the body itself, nor does it mean the body is evil.
It refers to the self-centered, God-opposing, uncontrolled desires and tendencies within fallen human nature.
The desires of the flesh may include:
- Sexual impurity and indulgence.
- Greed, envy, and comparison.
- Anger, bitterness, and revenge.
- Pride, the desire for control, and self-proving.
- Uncontrolled dependence on comfort, security, entertainment, or approval.
The flesh is not an occasional bad thought but a continual force seeking to dominate a person.
3. What Does “The Spirit Is Against the Flesh” Mean?
Verse 17 says that the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh.
This does not mean the Spirit and the flesh are two equal gods or cosmic powers. Rather, within believers, the new desires produced by the Spirit oppose the old desires produced by fallen human nature.
This struggle does not mean you are not saved; it may actually show that the Spirit is truly at work in you.
例如:
For example:
- You want to be honest but fear losing a job opportunity.
- You want to forgive but still want revenge.
- You want to pray but are drawn to your phone and entertainment.
- You want to love others but are controlled by envy and comparison.
This is what “you cannot do the things you want to do” means: two pulls within a person create struggle, contradiction, and the need to depend on God.
4. What Does “Walk by the Spirit” Mean?
“Walk” does not mean a one-time decision but an ongoing way of life.
Walking by the Spirit includes:
1. Let the Spirit Shape Your Desires
The Spirit does not merely give external rules; He creates new desires in the heart to love God, love others, and pursue holiness. [1063]
2. Depend on God in Daily Choices
Pray, read Scripture, and seek wisdom before temptation comes, rather than regretting only after failure.
3. Refuse to Gratify the Desires of the Flesh
This does not mean suppressing all feelings but not letting sinful desires govern actions.
4. Receive Support in Community
Walk with trustworthy brothers and sisters who can remind you, pray for you, and help you see blind spots.
5. What Does “Not Under the Law” Mean?
Verse 18 says that if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.
This does not mean Christians may sin freely or that God’s moral standards no longer matter.
Rather, believers no longer rely on law-keeping for justification, acceptance, or salvation. [1064][1068]
Those led by the Spirit are not without moral direction; they live out love through the Spirit, and love is the summary of the Law. [1064][1074]
[
\text{律法主義:我要做,才能被接納。}
]
[
\text{Legalism: I must do this in order to be accepted.}
]
[
\text{放縱主義:我可以做,因為沒有後果。}
]
[
\text{License: I may do this because there are no consequences.}
]
[
\text{聖靈引導:我已經被接納,所以靠聖靈活出愛和順服。}
]
[
\text{Spirit-led: I am already accepted, so I live out love and obedience through the Spirit.}
]
6. A Psychological Perspective: Two Pulls and Habits
Psychologically, the struggle between flesh and Spirit can be understood as conflict between short-term impulses and deeper values.
People may face:
- Immediate gratification or long-term good?
- Revenge or forgiveness?
- Avoidance or facing reality?
- Controlling others or respecting and serving them?
To break old cycles, we need:
- Identify triggers.
- Establish healthy boundaries.
- Seek community support.
- Replace old patterns with new habits.
This complements Paul’s teaching: the Spirit’s work does not exclude concrete self-examination, prayer, community support, and disciplined living.
7. How Can We Walk by the Spirit Today?
1. Pray Daily
“Lord, guide my thoughts, choices, and actions today.”
2. Read and Meditate on Scripture
Let God’s word shape your values and judgment.
3. Recognize the Voice of the Flesh
Ask yourself: Does this thought come from fear, pride, envy, revenge, or love and truth?
4. Choose One Act of Obedience
For example: apologize, forgive, help someone in need, resist temptation, or pray for someone.
5. Receive Accountability in Community
Share struggles with trustworthy people who can pray for and remind you.
8. Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me freedom through Christ and for sending the Spirit to dwell in me. Keep me from overcoming the flesh by my own will or legalism; help me walk by the Spirit daily.
Lord, shine Your light into my life and show me which desires of the flesh are controlling me: pride, envy, anger, greed, fear, lust, control, or comparison.
Keep me from gratifying the desires of the flesh; instead, let Your Spirit shape my desires. When I am tempted, give me watchfulness, wisdom, and strength to turn to You early.
Keep me from returning to the slavery of justification by law, and from turning freedom into license. Help me live out love, holiness, and responsibility through the Spirit in family, church, work, and society.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.
結語
Conclusion
The central message of Galatians 5:16–18 is:
Christians overcome the flesh not by the Law but by living a new life through the Spirit; those led by the Spirit no longer seek God’s acceptance through the Law.
Therefore, do not rely on willpower alone, nor turn freedom into license. Walk by the Spirit, letting Him shape your desires, choices, and actions.
