經文
Scripture
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.”
1. “One Another” Appears Three Times: Paul Cares About Community Relationships
In these three verses, “one another” appears three times:
- Verse 13: Serve one another through love.
- Verse 15: Bite and devour one another.
- Verse 15: Be consumed by one another.
Paul cares not only whether individuals are spiritual but also how believers relate to one another.
A person may be zealous in devotion, Bible reading, church attendance, and ministry, yet be full of comparison, criticism, envy, and division in the community.
Such “spirituality” is incomplete.
2. Freedom Is for Service, Not Self
Paul says we were called to freedom, but freedom is not an opportunity for indulging the flesh.
Christian freedom is not “having no master”; it is moving from slavery to sin under the good lordship of Christ.
The purpose of freedom is therefore not self-satisfaction but serving one another through love.
[
\text{律法主義:我要做,才能被接納。}
]
[
\text{Legalism: I must do this in order to be accepted.}
]
[
\text{放縱主義:我可以做,因為沒有後果。}
]
[
\text{License: I may do this because there are no consequences.}
]
[
\text{福音的自由:我已經被接納,所以甘心用愛服侍。}
]
[
\text{Gospel freedom: I am already accepted, so I willingly serve in love.}
]
3. Concrete Expressions of Serving One Another
“Serving one another” is not an abstract slogan but an action that can be practiced in daily life.
1. In the Church
- Intentionally get to know newcomers.
- Notice the lonely, sick, elderly, and those in need.
- Do not leave ministry only to pastors and a few coworkers.
- Accompany others in weakness rather than criticizing them.
2. In the Family
- Handle disagreements with gentleness rather than control.
- Accompany hurting family members instead of rushing to blame.
- Make the home a place where people can speak truth, receive comfort, and learn forgiveness.
3. In the Workplace
- Work honestly without taking credit from others.
- Respect subordinates and colleagues without abusing power.
- Understand the situation before publicly criticizing someone who makes a mistake.
4. In Society
- Respect people of different backgrounds and beliefs.
- Speak for the vulnerable without inciting hatred.
- Help those in need through practical action.
4. How Does “Love Your Neighbor” Fulfill the Law?
Verse 14 says, “The whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”
This does not mean the Law is unimportant or that believers need no moral standards.
Rather, love is the direction the Law truly points toward.
Loving your neighbor as yourself includes:
- Not harming others.
- Not deceiving, stealing, or slandering.
- Respecting others’ bodies, property, reputation, and dignity.
- Actively seeking others’ good.
- Being willing to forgive rather than take revenge.
Love is not an abstract feeling but concrete action.
5. The Warning Against Biting and Devouring
Verse 15 uses a very strong image: “If you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.”
This does not describe ordinary disagreement but a community acting like wild animals, attacking, slandering, excluding, and destroying one another.
In the Galatian church, this conflict may have come from:
- Some promoting circumcision and legalism.
- Believers dividing over identity, tradition, and religious performance.
- Attacking, slandering, and excluding others through words.
- Treating those who disagree as enemies.
6. “Biting and Devouring” in the Church Today
Similar situations may appear in today’s church:
- Hurting others through gossip, sarcasm, and behind-the-scenes criticism.
- Dividing over political views, worship styles, or theological differences.
- Using “spiritual” language to cover control, envy, and revenge.
- Welcoming only people similar to oneself while excluding those from different backgrounds.
- Treating pastors, coworkers, or fellow believers as competitors.
Such behavior ultimately destroys the church’s witness and wounds believers.
7. A Psychological Perspective: How Conflict Escalates
Interpersonal conflict often follows this cycle:
[
\text{受傷} \rightarrow \text{防衛} \rightarrow \text{攻擊} \rightarrow \text{對方反擊} \rightarrow \text{更深的分裂}
]
[
\text{Hurt} \rightarrow \text{Defensiveness} \rightarrow \text{Attack} \rightarrow \text{Counterattack} \rightarrow \text{Deeper Division}
]
“Biting and devouring” is the result of this cycle.
To break it, we need:
- Acknowledging emotions without being controlled by them.
- Separating facts from assumptions.
- Expressing disagreement respectfully.
- Being willing to apologize, forgive, and repair.
- Seeking appropriate third-party help.
8. How Can We Practice “One Another” Today?
1. Ask Yourself: Am I “Biting” Someone?
For example: Am I criticizing, mocking, excluding, or punishing someone through silence?
2. Choose One Act of Service
For example: greet someone overlooked, help someone in need, apologize to someone you hurt, or pray for someone with whom you disagree.
3. Speak Truth in Love
Do not hide truth out of fear of conflict, nor lose love because you uphold truth.
4. Live by the Spirit
Pray daily: “Lord, keep me from being controlled by lust, anger, and comparison. Help me live out love through Your Spirit.”
9. Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me freedom through Christ. Keep me from using freedom as an opportunity for indulging the flesh; instead, help me serve one another through love.
Lord, keep me from becoming proud because of my performance or inferior because of my failures. When I compare myself with others, remind me that You have accepted me. When I feel unworthy, remind me that Your grace is sufficient.
Keep me from returning to the slavery of justification by law, and from turning freedom into license. Give me the Spirit’s power to love You, love others, do good, and take responsibility.
Keep me from despising the weak, and from denying myself because of my background or past. Help me live out the freedom and hope found in Christ in family, church, work, and society.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.
結語
Conclusion
Galatians 5:13–15 reminds us that Christian freedom is not license but serving one another through love.
Freedom is not “I may do whatever I want,” but “I am no longer controlled by sin and can choose love and goodness.”
Therefore, do not bite and devour one another today, nor use freedom to harm others. Serve in love, so that the church may become a community that witnesses to Christ.
