October 13 Devotional: The Two Women Are Two Covenants

經文

Scripture

“Now this may be interpreted allegorically: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.”

Paul says, “This may be interpreted allegorically,” meaning that he uses the story of Abraham, Hagar, Sarah, Ishmael, and Isaac to explain two different spiritual principles.

This does not mean the biblical story is merely an allegory without historical basis, nor that we may freely turn any biblical figure into whatever symbol we prefer. Under the Spirit’s guidance, Paul applies the Old Testament story to the issue facing the Galatian church.

The Galatian church faced a problem: some teachers claimed that Gentile believers needed not only to trust Jesus but also to observe Jewish laws, such as circumcision, festivals, and dietary rules, in order to become complete members of God’s people.

Paul uses the two women to represent two different paths.

2. Two Women, Two Covenants

The slave womanThe free woman
Mount SinaiThe promise
Represents the covenant of lawRepresents the covenant of grace
Bears children for slaveryBears the child of promise
Relies on human effort and performanceRelies on God’s promise and power
Leads to slaveryLeads to freedom

Paul is not saying that the Mosaic Law is evil or that the Old Testament has no value. The Law was given by God and has a real function: it reveals sin, teaches holiness, protects Israel, and points to Christ.

What Paul opposes is turning the Law into a means of salvation and justification, as though people could earn God’s acceptance by keeping rules.

The “present Jerusalem” in verse 25 does not simply mean the physical city of Jerusalem, but the religious system centered on legalism at that time.

This system treated law-keeping, circumcision, and tradition as necessary conditions for belonging to God’s people, gaining acceptance, and maintaining identity.

Paul says that this system brings slavery, because people can never be sure whether they have done enough.

In contrast, verse 26 will speak of “the Jerusalem above,” representing God’s heavenly people established through grace and promise.

4. What Slaveries May We Still Choose Today?

Paul’s warning applies not only to first-century religious regulations but also to the many forces that still take away human freedom today.

1. Slaves to Legalism

Some people think, “If I perform well enough, God will love me.”

They treat devotion, church attendance, giving, ministry, or moral performance as conditions for God’s acceptance.

This way of life produces anxiety, comparison, pride, and condemnation.

2. Slaves to Religion

Religion can be good, but when people treat tradition, rituals, group identity, or leaders’ opinions as the highest authority, they may lose a genuine relationship with God.

The question is not “Do I have habits?” but “Do these habits help me love God and others more?”

3. Slaves to Material Desire

Money, property, positions, consumption, and success are not necessarily sinful, but they can become masters.

When people cannot stop buying, cannot accept loss, or cannot rejoice in another person’s success, material desire has begun to rule their lives.

4. Slaves to Bad Habits

Pornography, alcohol, gambling, phone addiction, overeating, revenge, or avoidance can move from an occasional choice to a difficult cycle.

These habits often promise comfort, stimulation, or escape, but ultimately bring shame, isolation, and deeper bondage.

5. Slaves to Other People’s Opinions

Some people are not bound by religious rules but by “What will others think of me?”

They fear rejection, being different, or losing approval. As a result, they dare not speak truth, confess faith, or set boundaries.

5. How Can We Tell Whether We Are Still in Bondage?

Ask yourself four questions:

    Am I afraid of losing it?
    Can I not stop?
    Is it affecting my relationship with God, family, work, or conscience?
    Am I willing to give it up for Christ?

A legitimate desire can become bondage when it turns into an unquestionable demand.

For example, job security is legitimate, but if one deceives, falsifies information, or harms others to keep a job, the desire for security has become a master.

6. Grace Brings Freedom, Not License

Freedom from legalism does not mean Christians may sin freely.

True freedom means that I am no longer controlled by sin, fear, comparison, or self-centeredness. Therefore, I can choose to love God, love others, do good, and obey.

[
\text{律法主義:我要做,才能被接納。}
]

[
\text{Legalism: I must do this in order to be accepted.}
]

[
\text{放縱主義:我可以做,因為沒有後果。}
]

[
\text{License: I may do this because there are no consequences.}
]

[
\text{福音的自由:我已經被接納,所以甘心做神喜悅的事。}
]

[
\text{Gospel freedom: I am already accepted, so I willingly do what pleases God.}
]

7. Practical Steps for Today

1. Name One Thing That Enslaves You

For example: dependence on approval, your phone, pornography, alcohol, money, comparison, anger, or control.

2. Identify Its Promise

What does it promise you? Security, happiness, love, escape from pain, or proof of your worth?

3. Answer It with the Gospel

I am already accepted in Christ. I do not need this thing to prove my worth.

4. Take One Concrete Action

For example: remove a source of temptation, seek help from a trustworthy person, rest, apologize, stop comparing yourself, or pray for someone in need.

8. Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for freeing me from slavery to sin, fear, and self-proving through Christ. Keep me from trying to prove my worth through law, performance, human approval, or material desire.

Lord, shine Your light into my life and show me which habits, desires, or fears are controlling me. If I have turned legitimate desires into idols, forgive me and give me strength to return to You.

Give me freedom in grace and willing obedience in freedom. Keep me from using freedom as an excuse for indulgence; instead, help me use freedom to love You, love others, do good, and take responsibility.

Keep me living in the freedom of Christ today in work, family, church, and society. May I not be bound by fear and comparison, nor allow any created thing to take Your place in my heart.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

結語

Conclusion

Galatians 4:24–25 reminds us that not all religious activity brings freedom; some seemingly devout rules may lead people back into slavery.

The real question is not “Do I have rules?” but “Am I trying to earn God’s acceptance through rules?”

In Christ, we have already been accepted by grace. Therefore, we need not remain slaves to law, religion, material desire, bad habits, or other people’s opinions; we can live as God’s free children.
