經文
Scripture
“But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. For it is written, ‘Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.’”
1. The Contrast Between Two Jerusalems
Paul uses two women and two Jerusalems in Galatians 4:21–27 to explain two different spiritual identities.
| The slave woman | The free woman |
| Mount Sinai | The Jerusalem above |
| Represents the covenant of law | Represents the covenant of grace and promise |
| Bears children for slavery | Bears free children |
| Relies on human effort and performance | Relies on God’s promise and grace |
“The Jerusalem above” does not refer to the physical city of Jerusalem, but to God’s heavenly people established through Christ and the gospel.
Therefore, the believer’s mother is not legalism, religious rules, or human performance, but the promise community established by God through grace.
2. What Does “She Is Our Mother” Mean?
Paul says that the Jerusalem above is “our mother,” meaning that our spiritual life comes from God’s promise, not from human effort.
This “mother” does not refer to a female deity, nor does it mean believers should worship a “heavenly mother.” The point is that believers belong to the heavenly community established by God through grace.
As children of this mother, believers receive:
- Freedom: no longer earning God’s acceptance through law and performance.
- Identity: children of God, not slaves under a religious system.
- Belonging: belonging to the community God establishes through the gospel.
- Hope: inheriting what God has promised in Christ.
3. The Background of Isaiah 54
Verse 27 quotes Isaiah 54:1. In Isaiah’s context, Jerusalem had become like a woman who was exiled, desolate, and barren; yet God promised that she would again be blessed and have many children.
Paul applies this promise to the gospel age: the community God establishes through Christ is broader, freer, and more alive than any community built through law and human effort.
This does not mean the Old Testament has no value or that Israel has been rejected by God. Rather, God’s promise to Abraham is ultimately opened to all nations in Christ.
4. What “Rejoice, O Barren One” Means for Us
Isaiah’s image is striking: a woman who is barren and has not given birth is commanded to rejoice, because God will give her more children than the woman who has a husband.
This reminds us that God’s blessing is not determined by human ability, natural conditions, or social status.
God can fulfill His promises in the places that seem most hopeless, most lacking in resources, and most overlooked.
This is comfort for:
- People who feel they have no achievement.
- People who feel overlooked by family, church, or society.
- People experiencing infertility, illness, unemployment, or loneliness.
- People who feel spiritually weak and unable to change by their own strength.
God’s work does not begin with human sufficiency; it begins with God’s promise.
5. A Free Identity: Neither Pride nor Inferiority
Since the Jerusalem above is our mother, we are free children, not slaves under legalism.
This identity brings two reminders:
Do Not Become Proud
Freedom is not because we are better than others, but because God has been gracious to us.
We must not look down on those still struggling because we have faith, gifts, ministry, or moral performance.
Do Not Become Inferior
Nor do we need to think that we are unworthy to approach God because of education, income, appearance, family background, failure, or past sin.
In Christ, our worth is not determined by human comparison but by God’s promise.
6. How Can We Live Out This Identity Today?
1. Pray as a Child
Do not come to God only asking, “Have I done well enough?” Come also saying, “Father, I need You.”
2. Refuse Comparison
Do not measure your worth by another person’s achievement, gifts, wealth, or status.
3. Welcome the Weak
Since God has accepted us though we were unworthy, we should welcome the weak, wounded, overlooked, and struggling.
4. Keep Hoping in Difficulty
“Rejoice, O barren one” does not deny pain; it trusts that God can open a way where there seems to be no way.
7. Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for making me Your child through Christ and for making me part of the Jerusalem above. Keep me from forgetting that my identity comes not from law, performance, wealth, education, or human approval, but from Your promise and grace.
Lord, keep me from becoming proud because of my achievements or inferior because of my weakness. When I compare myself with others, remind me that You have accepted me. When I feel unworthy, remind me that Your grace is sufficient.
Help me keep hoping in difficulty, trusting that You care for me in loneliness, and relying on Your strength in weakness. Make me a blessing to others, especially those who feel overlooked, wounded, and hopeless.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.
