Scripture

“Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman. But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.”

1. Background: The Problem Facing the Galatian Church

Paul wrote Galatians because certain teachers were telling Gentile believers that faith in Jesus was not enough. They claimed that Gentiles also needed to observe Jewish laws, such as circumcision and festivals, in order to truly belong to God’s people.

Paul strongly opposed this teaching because it added human performance to the salvation Christ had already accomplished.

In Galatians 4:21–23, Paul uses Abraham’s two sons as an analogy. Ishmael, born to the slave woman Hagar, represents what comes through human effort and the flesh. Isaac, born to the free woman Sarah, represents what comes through God’s promise and power.

2. The Two Sons Represent Two Paths

Born to Hagar, the slave womanBorn to Sarah, the free woman
Born according to the flesh, human plans, and human abilityBorn through God’s promise and power
Represents reliance on law, performance, and self-effortRepresents reliance on grace, faith, and Christ
Leads to slaveryLeads to freedom

Paul is not saying that Ishmael as a person had no value or that God did not love him. He is explaining two different spiritual principles.

One path says, “I will earn God’s acceptance through my effort, performance, and religious observance.”

The other path says, “I acknowledge that I cannot be justified by works, so I trust Christ and receive the promise God gives by grace.”

3. Why Do People Choose the Path of Law?

The path of law seems reliable because it gives people a checklist: if they complete certain tasks, they can feel sure that they are acceptable.

Yet it actually brings:

  • Fear: I am never sure whether I have done enough.
  • Pride: I deserve grace more than those who perform worse.
  • Comparison: I prove my superiority through others’ failures.
  • Hypocrisy: I maintain an outward image while hiding inner struggles.
  • Slavery: My peace depends on my performance.

Paul asks the Galatians, “Why do you want to return to being under the law?” The same question comes to us:

Am I still trying to prove that I deserve God’s love through performance, comparison, human approval, or religious activity?

4. The Path of Grace Is Not License

Choosing grace does not mean, “Since I am not justified by the law, I can do whatever I want.”

True grace frees us from sin’s slavery and gives us the ability to love God, love others, pursue holiness, and take responsibility.

Christian obedience is not a way to purchase God’s love; it is a response to the love already received.

[
\text{不是:先做得好,才被神接納。}
]

[
\text{Not: perform well first, then be accepted by God.}
]

[
\text{而是:在基督裡已被接納,所以甘心順服。}
]

[
\text{But: accepted in Christ, therefore willingly obeying.}
]

5. What Can We Choose Today?

Many things in life cannot be chosen, such as our birth, family background, past hurts, and certain circumstances.

But we can choose:

  • Whether to trust God’s promise.
  • Whether to acknowledge our need for grace.
  • Whether to let Christ be the foundation of our identity.
  • Whether to stop proving ourselves through comparison and performance.
  • Whether to trust God in today’s choices rather than act out of fear.

結語

Conclusion

Galatians 4:21–23 reminds us that God does not determine who belongs to Him according to ancestry, performance, or religious achievement. He receives all who trust Christ through promise and grace.

Today, I will not choose to earn God’s acceptance through law and performance. I will choose to trust Christ, receive grace as God’s child, and respond faithfully to His love in my work and daily life.
