October 20 Devotional: A Little Leaven Leavens the Whole Lump

經文

Scripture

“You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion is not from him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump.”

Paul compares the Christian life to a race. The Galatians initially “ran well”: they trusted Christ, received the Spirit, experienced God’s grace, and began to grow in faith.

“Running well” does not mean they were perfect; it means their direction was right, their starting point was right, and they were following Christ by grace.

But now someone has hindered them so that they no longer obey the truth.

“Hindered” carries the sense of being tripped, blocked, or obstructed in a race.

2. Who Hindered Them?

Those hindering the Galatians were teachers who told them they needed circumcision, observance of the Mosaic Law, and Jewish festivals in order to become complete members of God’s people.

Paul says, “This persuasion is not from him who calls you.”

Not every religious voice comes from God.

Some voices may sound devout, reasonable, or loving, but if they lead people away from the sufficiency of Christ, they are not from God.

The Galatians had been accepted through faith in Christ, but now they were being persuaded that they also needed circumcision, the Law, and religious performance to be fully accepted by God.

3. What Does “A Little Leaven” Mean?

In Galatians 5:9, “leaven” does not refer to a good influence but to the spreading power of legalism and false teaching.

Paul means that if even a little “justification by works” thinking is allowed into the church, it will gradually influence the whole community.

This does not mean every small thing has massive influence, but that certain seemingly small deviations can gradually change the whole direction.

例如:

For example:

  • “Jesus alone may not be enough; I need to do a little more.”
  • “God’s acceptance may also depend on my performance today.”
  • “I am more spiritual than those who do not follow the rules.”
  • “After failing, I must punish myself before returning to God.”

These thoughts may seem small at first, but they gradually change how people understand the gospel.

4. How Leaven Affects the Whole Community

The characteristic of leaven is that it does not take much to affect the whole lump.

Similarly, false teaching and spiritual deviation have permeating power.

It may spread through:

1. 比較

1. Comparison

When people begin comparing who is more spiritual, faithful, or worthy of God’s love, legalism begins to spread.

2. Fear

When people begin fearing, “If I do not do enough, God will not accept me,” grace is replaced by law.

3. Group Pressure

When a church begins judging spirituality by outward performance, people start conforming to the group to be accepted.

4. Pride

When people feel they deserve grace more than others, they begin looking down on the weak, failing, or different.

5. What Small Deviations May Become Leaven Today?

1. Turning Devotion into Performance

“I must have devotions long enough for God to love me.”

Devotion is a response within grace, not a condition for purchasing God’s acceptance.

2. Turning Ministry into Identity

“The more I serve, the more valuable I am.”

Ministry is stewardship of gifts, not a way to prove one deserves God’s love.

3. Turning Tradition into Truth

“Only our church’s way is correct.”

Tradition can help, but it cannot replace Scripture and Christ.

4. Turning Others’ Failures into One’s Superiority

“I am more spiritual than he is.”

Such comparison damages community and makes people forget that they too need grace.

6. How to Prevent Leaven from Spreading

1. Return to the Gospel

Remind yourself daily:

I am already accepted in Christ; my obedience is a response to grace, not a purchase of grace.

2. Discern Voices

Not every devout-sounding word comes from God.

Ask yourself:

  • Does this teaching make me rely more on Christ?
  • Or does it make me rely more on my performance?

3. Refuse Comparison

Do not prove your superiority through others’ failures, nor deny yourself because of others’ success.

4. Guard the Community

The church should not judge people’s worth by performance, wealth, status, or tradition.

7. Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving me freedom through Christ. Keep me from forgetting that my identity comes not from circumcision, festivals, religious performance, or moral achievement, but from Your promise and grace.

Lord, keep me from becoming proud because of my performance or inferior because of my failures. When I compare myself with others, remind me that You have accepted me. When I feel unworthy, remind me that Your grace is sufficient.

Keep me from returning to the slavery of justification by law, and from turning freedom into license. Give me the Spirit’s power to love You, love others, do good, and take responsibility.

Keep me from despising the weak, and from denying myself because of my background or past. Help me live out the freedom and hope found in Christ in family, church, work, and society.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.

結語

Conclusion

Galatians 5:7–9 reminds us that the Christian life may begin well but lose direction because of false teaching and spiritual deviation.

A little “justification by works” thinking can gradually influence the whole community; a little comparison, fear, pride, and religious performance can also destroy the freedom of grace.

Therefore, return to the gospel today: I am already accepted in Christ and need not prove myself through performance. I will live by the Spirit and reject any voice that leads me away from the sufficiency of Christ.
