經文
Scripture
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
— Galatians 5:1
1. Its Place in Galatians
Galatians 5:1 marks a turning point in Paul’s argument and summarizes the analogy of chapter 4.
Earlier, Paul used Hagar and Sarah, Ishmael and Isaac, the earthly Jerusalem and the Jerusalem above to explain two different spiritual identities: those who rely on the Law and the flesh are slaves; those who rely on promise and grace are free children.
Verse 5:1 is therefore not a sudden new theme but a one-sentence summary of the whole argument:
Christ has set us free; therefore, do not return to slavery.
2. What Is the “Yoke of Slavery”?
In the context of Galatians, the “yoke of slavery” primarily refers to treating circumcision, the Mosaic Law, and Jewish religious regulations as necessary conditions for salvation, justification, and belonging to God’s people.
Some were teaching the Galatians, “Believing in Jesus is good, but you must also be circumcised and keep the Law to truly belong to God.”
Paul believed this did not complete the gospel but returned people to slavery based on earning acceptance through performance.
3. What Freedom Does Christ Give?
The freedom Christ gives is not license to do whatever one wants, nor an individual choice unrelated to God.
It includes at least:
1. Freedom from Justification by the Law
Believers no longer need circumcision, festivals, dietary rules, or religious performance to earn God’s acceptance.
2. Freedom from Condemnation
Christ has borne sin’s penalty; believers need not prove repentance through endless self-punishment.
3. Freedom from Fear
God’s acceptance does not depend on how well I perform today, but on Christ’s finished work.
4. Freedom from Comparison
I do not need to surpass others to prove my worth.
5. Freedom from Self-Centeredness
Freedom is not indulging the flesh but living out love, holiness, and responsibility through the Spirit.
4. What Does “Stand Firm” Mean?
“Stand firm” does not mean passively saying, “I am already free.” It means actively rejecting any teaching, habit, or relationship that would bring us back into slavery.
Standing firm includes:
1. Refusing to Earn God’s Love Through Performance
Do not treat devotion, church attendance, giving, ministry, or moral performance as conditions for purchasing God’s acceptance.
2. Refusing to Let Others’ Standards Replace Christ
Church tradition, group expectations, religious habits, and spiritual leaders’ opinions cannot become the ultimate basis for belonging to God.
3. Refusing to Turn Freedom into License
Freedom is not “I may sin freely,” but “I am no longer controlled by sin and can choose love and goodness.”
4. Living by the Spirit
Paul will soon say, “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”
Christian freedom needs the Spirit’s power to sustain it; otherwise, it soon moves from legalism to another slavery: being controlled by lust, anger, envy, pride, and self-centeredness.
5. Why Do People Want to Return to Slavery?
Even after experiencing freedom, people may return to old patterns because they are familiar, frightening, or seem controllable.
1. Familiarity
Freedom requires responsibility; slavery is painful but may remove the burden of choosing.
2. 控制感
2. A Sense of Control
Legalism provides a checklist: “If I complete these things, I can be sure I am acceptable.” But relationship with God requires trust, and trust cannot be completely controlled.
3. Shame
After failure, people may feel unworthy to return to God and try to repair themselves through more religious performance.
The gospel invites us to return directly to the Father, confess sin, receive forgiveness, and begin again in grace.
6. How to Discern Whether You Are Returning to Slavery
Ask yourself four questions:
Am I earning God’s love through performance? -
Am I losing peace because I fear falling short? -
Am I proving my superiority through others’ failures? -
Am I using freedom as an excuse for indulgence?
If the answer is yes, you may be returning to some form of slavery.
7. Practical Steps for Today
1. Name One Thing Enslaving You
For example: dependence on approval, your phone, pornography, alcohol, money, comparison, anger, or control.
2. Answer It with the Gospel
I am already accepted in Christ. I do not need this thing to prove my worth.
3. Take One Concrete Action
For example: remove a source of temptation, seek help from a trustworthy person, rest, apologize, stop comparing yourself, or pray for someone in need.
4. Live by the Spirit
Pray daily: “Lord, keep me from relying on my own strength. Help me live out love and holiness through Your Spirit.”
8. Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me freedom through Christ. Keep me from forgetting that my identity comes not from circumcision, festivals, religious performance, or moral achievement, but from Your promise and grace.
Lord, keep me from becoming proud because of my performance or inferior because of my failures. When I compare myself with others, remind me that You have accepted me. When I feel unworthy, remind me that Your grace is sufficient.
Keep me from returning to the slavery of justification by law, and from turning freedom into license. Give me the Spirit’s power to love You, love others, do good, and take responsibility.
Keep me from despising the weak, and from denying myself because of my background or past. Help me live out the freedom and hope found in Christ in family, church, work, and society.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.
結語
Conclusion

The central message of Galatians 5:1 is:
Christ has set us free, so we must not return to slavery based on earning acceptance through law, performance, or self-effort.
Therefore, do not lose peace because you fear falling short, nor turn freedom into license. Stand firm in Christ, living out love, holiness, and responsibility through the Spirit.
