October 8 Devotional: Why Return to Slavery?10

Galatians 4:8–11 is Paul’s serious warning against returning to slavery. The Galatians had once been controlled by false gods and idols, but after coming to faith they were becoming bound again by legalism and religious rules. Paul shows that moving from idolatry to rule-based righteousness may look different outwardly but can return a person to the same slavery to powerless systems.

Verse 9 contains a precious correction: “Now that you have come to know God—or rather to be known by God.” Paul first speaks from the human side of knowing God, then shifts to the divine side of being known by God.

This means that faith is grounded not in how intensely people seek God, but in God’s prior initiative to know, call, and receive them.

“To be known by God” does not merely mean that God knows our information; it means being known relationally and received through grace and calling.

Paul’s question is therefore pointed:

Since you have been known and received by the true God, why return to things that cannot save you?

On the surface, idolatry and legalism seem completely opposite:

  • Idolatry: worshiping images, objects, or false gods.
  • Legalism: strictly observing religious rules.

Yet both can share the same inner logic:

  • “If I perform certain actions, I can control the divine or obtain blessing.”
  • “My worth depends on religious performance.”
  • “If I complete the requirements, I do not need to face the real condition of my heart.”
  • “I can secure my future through my own methods.”

The gospel is different: God is not an object humans can manipulate, and salvation is not a product purchased through rituals and performance.

Verse 10 most likely refers to Jewish religious calendar observances such as Sabbaths, new moons, festivals, sabbatical years, and jubilees. The Galatians had apparently been taught that observing these calendars and rituals was necessary for full salvation and genuine belonging to God.[4][5][6]

Paul is not saying that every practice of remembering God according to a calendar is automatically sinful, nor that Christians may never have special gatherings, seasons, or spiritual practices. The issue is the salvation meaning attached to them.

If a person says:

“I can earn God’s acceptance through these rituals, and those who do not observe them are not complete Christians.”

Then a potentially meaningful practice has been turned into a condition that enslaves people.

Modern legalism does not always wear ancient religious clothing. It may appear in church life and personal devotion:

  • “Only one style of prayer is genuinely spiritual.”
  • “God will bless me only if I attend enough meetings.”
  • “If you do not accept certain traditions, you are not a faithful Christian.”
  • “My ministry, giving, or Bible-reading record determines whether God loves me.”
  • “People with different practices are spiritually inferior.”
  • “After failing, I must perform many things before I can return to God.”

Some of these practices may be good in themselves, but once they become conditions for justification, comparison, or identity, they become “weak and worthless elemental principles.”

Your phrase “Some things may be looked back upon but not walked back into” captures the warning of this passage well.

Looking back can mean:

  • Remembering what God has rescued us from.
  • Acknowledging the real bondage of past idols and sin.
  • Learning from failure.
  • Giving thanks for God’s grace.

Walking back into it means:

  • Making idols the master of life again.
  • Trying again to earn God’s love through performance.
  • Allowing social pressure to determine conscience again.
  • Treating Christ’s finished salvation as insufficient.

Even after experiencing freedom, people may return to old patterns because they are familiar, frightening, or seem controllable.

Familiarity

Freedom requires responsibility; slavery is painful but may remove the burden of choosing.

控制感

A Sense of Control

Legalism provides a checklist: “If I complete these things, I can be sure I am acceptable.” But relationship with God requires trust, and trust cannot be completely controlled.

Shame

After failure, people may feel unworthy to return to God and try to repair themselves through more religious performance.

The gospel invites us to return directly to the Father, confess sin, receive forgiveness, and begin again in grace.

Ask four questions:

  2. Am I doing this out of love for God or fear that He will reject me?
  4. If I fail, do I still believe Christ’s grace is sufficient?
  6. Does this practice make me love God and others more and become humbler?
  8. Am I using my practice to measure and condemn others?

Healthy discipline leads people toward Christ; legalism turns attention back to self and keeps asking, “Have I done enough?”

Verse 11 says, “I fear that I have labored over you in vain.” Paul is not merely reacting emotionally; he sees the danger of a distorted gospel. People may still speak of believing in Jesus while practically shifting their trust back to religious performance.

This is an important warning for the church: the most dangerous regression is not always openly denying Christ; sometimes it is retaining Christ’s name while placing ultimate security in rules, traditions, leaders, or personal performance.

You can practice three things today:

1. Name One “Elemental Principle” Controlling You

For example: “I must succeed to have worth,” “God loves only those who perform well,” or “Everyone must approve of me.”

2. Answer It with the Gospel

God already knows and receives me; my worth is first found in belonging to Christ, not in my performance.

3. Take One Act of Obedience from Freedom, Not Fear

For example, honestly admit a mistake, forgive someone, rest, help someone in need, or let go of comparison.

結語

Conclusion

Galatians 4:8–11 still asks us directly:

Since you have been known by God, redeemed by Christ, and made God’s child, why return to things that cannot give life but only produce fear and self-proving?

We may look back on the past with gratitude for God’s rescue, but we must not walk back into idolatry, legalism, or slavery to self-justification.

Christ has set us free; let us not try to purchase the sonship freely given to us. Let us run toward our heavenly home by faith and follow the Father today with the freedom and responsibility of His children.
