October 5 Devotional: Heirs Who Receive the Inheritance10月5日靈修:承受產業的兒女

Galatians 4:1–2 uses the image of an underage heir to explain that before Christ came, God’s people were heirs of the promise but functionally lived like slaves under supervision. At the time appointed by the Father, Christ came and the age of fulfillment began.

In the ancient world, even a child who was the legal heir of an estate could not manage it before reaching maturity. The child remained under guardians and trustees, and in practical life was little different from a slave.

Paul’s point is not that the child truly lacks the inheritance, but that:

  • The identity already exists.
  • The inheritance awaits formal reception.
  • The rights of freedom and maturity have not yet been fully manifested.

This illustrates the situation of God’s people in the Old Testament: the promise already existed, but the full revelation and redemption brought by Christ were still awaited.

In the context of Galatians 4:1–7, the “time appointed by the father” refers to God’s appointed moment in salvation history, especially Christ’s coming, death, and granting of sonship.[1][2]

Verse 4 goes on to say, “When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son.” Christ’s coming was therefore neither historical accident nor emergency repair, but part of God’s established plan of salvation.

This reminds us that God’s timing may exceed human understanding, but delay is not forgetfulness, and waiting does not mean God is inactive.

In the larger passage, after Christ has come believers no longer remain in the condition of underage heirs. Through Christ they receive adoption as God’s children and become heirs. Scholars note that Galatians 4:1–7 restates the message of 3:23–29: believers are no longer slaves but adopted children and heirs.[1][4]

This means Christians should no longer live as:

  • Slaves uncertain whether God accepts them.
  • People who constantly perform to earn the Father’s approval.
  • People who know rules but do not know the Father.
  • Heirs who live as though they have no inheritance.

In Christ, believers may approach God with confidence, not because they are worthy in themselves but because Christ has opened the way.

“Inheriting” must not be reduced to a guarantee of earthly wealth, success, health, or constant prosperity.

In Galatians, the inheritance primarily includes:

  • Becoming God’s children in Christ.
  • Receiving the promised Holy Spirit.
  • Being justified by faith and reconciled to God.
  • Becoming heirs of Abraham’s promise.
  • Sharing in the final salvation and glory of God’s kingdom.

This inheritance may include God’s provision, but it cannot be equated with “Christians must become wealthy.” Jesus and the apostles taught that believers may suffer, face persecution, and experience lack while still remaining beloved children of God.

1. Do Not Earn God’s Love Through Performance

If you think, “God loves me when I do well spiritually, but rejects me when I fail,” you are still living with a slave mentality.

The gospel does not remove obedience; it changes obedience from fearful labor into a child’s response.

2. Do Not See Yourself Only as a Criminal

Believers must acknowledge sin, repent, and receive forgiveness, but God does not merely release us from the courtroom; He brings us into His household.

3. Do Not Let the Past Define the Future

Family background, failure, addiction, guilt, and others’ judgments do not outrank the identity God gives in Christ.

4. Learn to Pray as a Child

A child comes to the father not merely to submit a work report but to share fears, needs, gratitude, and confusion.

Prayer can move from “Lord, have I performed well enough?” to “Father, lead me to live faithfully today.”

Psychologically, a slave mentality often appears as outward compliance and inward fear:

  • I must constantly prove myself to be loved.
  • If I make a mistake, I lose everything.
  • I cannot rest, or I am lazy and worthless.
  • I must rely only on myself and cannot trust others.

A child’s identity creates a different kind of maturity:

  • I can acknowledge limitation without shame.
  • I can receive correction without feeling completely rejected.
  • I can serve diligently without using service to prove my worth.
  • I can endure waiting, trusting that the Father still governs time.

This is not childish dependency but secure belonging, which enables growth, responsibility, and love.

Your devotional emphasis—“Since the appointed time has come, let us receive the Father’s promised inheritance by faith”—fits the passage, with two clarifications:

First, believers already have sonship and inheritance in Christ, but the fullness of glory remains future. This is the Christian “already but not yet”: salvation has begun, but its final completion is still awaited.

Second, receiving the inheritance by faith is not imagining or declaring that we will receive everything we want. It is trusting the grace God has promised in Christ and living according to His will.

結語

Conclusion

Galatians 4:1–2 delivers us from two errors:

  • Do not see yourself as identity-less slaves who survive only through performance.
  • Do not mistake freedom for doing whatever you want; live responsibly as mature children.

In Christ, we are neither forgotten children nor permanently supervised slaves, but children adopted by the Father and awaiting the full possession of the inheritance.

Therefore, pray today with a child’s confidence, live with an heir’s hope, and serve with mature responsibility. God’s appointed time has begun to be fulfilled in Christ, and His promised inheritance will not fail.
