October 6 Devotional: When the Time Had Fully Come10

The central message of Galatians 4:3–5 is not that Jesus came merely because historical circumstances happened to make the time suitable. It declares that Christ came at the fullness of the time appointed by the Father, entered real human life, submitted to the condition of the Law, and redeemed us so that we might become God’s children.

“When the fullness of time had come” first points to God’s sovereign timing in salvation. Paul does not say that humanity improved the world enough to make the Savior’s arrival possible; he says that God sent His Son at the time He appointed.

God may certainly use historical conditions as instruments in His plan. The Roman road system, relative stability, and widespread use of Koine Greek helped the gospel spread rapidly; but these were providential circumstances, not the ultimate cause of Christ’s coming.

A more precise understanding is:

God appoints the time and prepares the circumstances; history serves redemption, but history does not control redemption.

Verse 3 says that before maturity we were enslaved to the “elemental principles” of the world. The Greek term stoicheia can refer to basic elements, elementary principles, religious regulations, or powers governing the world. In Galatians, it is connected with the Law, pagan religion, and systems of seeking righteousness through external observance.

This bondage can appear as:

  • Using religious rules to prove worth before God.
  • Building identity through achievement, morality, or status.
  • Being ruled by idols, fear, desires, and social pressure.
  • Assuming that external standards can control life’s outcome.

Paul’s point is that whether through pagan idolatry or Jewish legalism, people remain enslaved whenever they treat created things, religious rules, or self-performance as the path to life.

Verse 4 says that God’s Son was “born of a woman.” This emphasizes that Christ truly entered human history and the human condition. He did not appear as an illusion or abstract idea but became genuinely human.

This is essential to salvation: if Christ did not truly become human, He could not truly represent humanity or obey, suffer, and die within the human condition.

“Born of a woman” also shows that God does not save from a distance but enters the human world personally:

  • Entering human birth and development.
  • Entering human limitations and weakness.
  • Entering human suffering and death.
  • Accomplishing redemption within human history.

“Born under the Law” means that Jesus, as a Jewish man, truly entered the covenantal obligations of the Mosaic Law. He did not stand outside the Law merely criticizing humanity; He obeyed God within the human condition and ultimately bore the curse resulting from human sin.

There are two dimensions:

Christ Fully Identifies with the Human Condition

He saves not as a distant observer but as our representative and substitute.

Christ Fulfills the Law’s Righteous Requirement

People cannot be justified through the Law, but Christ fulfills salvation through obedience and the cross, so believers do not need to earn God’s acceptance through performance.

Verse 5 says Christ came “to redeem those under the Law, so that we might receive adoption as children.” Redemption is not merely rescue from punishment; it brings people into God’s household as His children and heirs.

The order is important:

[
\text{基督進入人的處境}
->
\text{基督救贖人}
->
\text{信徒得兒女名分}
]

[
\text{Christ enters the human condition}
->
\text{Christ redeems}
->
\text{Believers receive adoption}
]

God does not merely say, “Your sin has been dealt with; now struggle on your own.”

He says, “You have been brought into My household; you may come before Me as My child.”

Your devotional question asks, “Are you waiting for God’s work today?” This can be understood in three ways:

1. Waiting Does Not Mean Doing Nothing

Biblical waiting includes prayer, faithfulness, repentance, service, and preparation. A farmer waits for harvest but continues to cultivate; believers wait for God while remaining faithful today.

2. Waiting Is Not Forcing God to Work on My Schedule

We may bring desires and pain before God, but we cannot treat our timetable as a command God must follow.

3. Waiting Does Not Mean God Is Not Already Working

Sometimes we expect one dramatic future act and overlook how God is already shaping our patience, faith, relationships, and character.

Waiting often creates anxiety because we cannot control timing, outcomes, or other people’s choices.

People may respond in three ways:

  • Control: constantly pushing, manipulating, and predicting outcomes.
  • Give up: stopping prayer and action because progress is not visible.
  • Trust: acknowledging limits and living faithfully within God’s timing.

Christian hope is not “I know when God will act,” but “I know God is faithful even when I do not know when He will act.”

You can practice waiting through these actions:

    Pray clearly. Name your desires, timetable, and fears before God.
    Discern today’s responsibility. Ask, “What can I faithfully do today before the outcome appears?”
    Stop unnecessary control. Reduce repetitive checking, pressuring, speculation, and comparison.
    Keep a record. Note how God has led you before, so anxiety does not erase your memory of His faithfulness.
    Wait with community. Share with mature believers rather than carrying the waiting alone.

結語

Conclusion

The central message of Galatians 4:3–5 is not that human history finally matured enough to receive Jesus, but this:

At the fullness of the time appointed by the Father, God took the initiative and sent His Son into the human world to redeem those in bondage and make them His children.

Therefore, when you are waiting for God’s work, remember three things:

  • God’s timing is not God’s forgetfulness.
  • Waiting is not inactivity but faithfulness before the outcome is visible.
  • The greatest salvation has already come in Christ; you are not an abandoned person waiting alone but an adopted child.

Lord, give me faith to trust Your faithfulness when You seem silent, Your goodness when You seem delayed, and Your guidance when I cannot control time or outcomes. Because You have made me Your child in Christ, I will wait quietly and follow faithfully.
