Galatians 3:26–29 declares that people do not become God’s children through ethnicity, social status, gender, wealth, or moral performance, but through faith and union with Christ. Everyone who belongs to Christ is part of Abraham’s promised family and an heir of the promise.
Verse 26 says, “Through faith in Christ Jesus you are all children of God.” This is the foundation of identity: God does not accept us only after we become perfect; He accepts us in Christ and then begins transforming us.
“Children of God” is more than a metaphor; it includes:
- A close relationship with God.
- Genuine belonging in God’s family.
- Freedom from proving worth through external achievement.
- Sharing the same salvation and hope with all believers.
A believer’s identity is therefore determined not by “How well am I performing?” but by “To whom do I belong?”
Verse 27 says that those baptized into Christ have “put on Christ.” In the ancient world, clothing could symbolize identity, belonging, and a new role in life.
Putting on Christ includes two dimensions:
Union in Identity
In Christ, believers no longer treat their former ethnic, class, and social labels as their highest identity.
Transformation in Life
Putting on Christ also means gradually living with Christ’s character: compassion, humility, honesty, holiness, forgiveness, and love.
Baptism is therefore not obtaining a religious membership card; it is a public declaration: “I belong to Christ, and I want Christ to shape my life.”
Verse 28 names three major social divisions of the ancient world:
- Jew and Greek: ethnicity and religious background.
- Slave and free: social and economic status.
- Male and female: sex and social roles.
Paul says that in Christ these distinctions can no longer determine who is closer to God, more valuable, more worthy of salvation, or qualified to receive the promise. All believers stand on equal ground before God’s grace.
This does not necessarily mean that all social, bodily, or functional differences immediately disappear. More precisely: differences may remain, but they no longer carry the power to create superiority or inferiority before God.
Men and women remain distinct people, younger and older people have different experiences, and the rich and poor may remain in different economic circumstances. But in Christ, these differences cannot justify discrimination, humiliation, or exclusion.
People easily rank themselves and others through external labels:
- I am more important because I have more money.
- I am wiser because I am more educated.
- I am closer to God because I belong to the right group.
- I deserve more respect because I serve more.
- You are permanently inferior because of your past sin.
Galatians 3:26–29 dismantles this human-centered ranking system. A believer’s ultimate dignity does not rest on wealth, education, occupation, ancestry, sex, appearance, or social status, but on belonging to Christ.
This passage confronts two opposite errors:
自高
Pride
If I treat wealth, education, status, ministry, or moral performance as a source of superiority, I forget that I too am saved by grace.
The gospel leaves no room for boasting because everyone receives God’s grace through faith in Christ.
自卑
Inferiority
If I believe I am unworthy to approach God because of family background, poverty, education, appearance, failure, or past sin, I am also denying God’s grace.
In Christ, believers are not valuable because they perform perfectly; they are valuable because God calls them His children in Christ.
Verse 29 connects the passage with God’s promise to Abraham. In Galatians 3, Paul teaches that the promise to Abraham reaches its fulfillment in Christ; because believers are united to Christ, they share in the promised family and inheritance.[1][2][7]
This does not mean Gentiles must first change their ethnicity and become Jewish in order to be saved, nor that circumcision or observance of the Mosaic Law makes someone Abraham’s offspring. The key is belonging to Christ.
The promised inheritance includes:
- Reconciliation with God.
- Identity in God’s family.
- New life through the Holy Spirit.
- The final hope of God’s kingdom.
- Spiritual blessings shared with all believers.
In the Church
The church should not rank people according to wealth, education, occupation, background, or ministry ability.
Practically:
- Do not value only the wealthy or influential.
- Do not treat new believers permanently as second-class members.
- Give women, minorities, low-income people, and people with disabilities genuine space to participate and be heard.
- Do not define someone’s future in Christ by their past.
In the Workplace
Christians cannot proclaim that all are one in Christ while discriminating against subordinates, looking down on cleaners, or abusing power at work.
In the Family
Husbands and wives, older and younger family members, parents and children must remember that authority within the family cannot erase one another’s dignity as people made in God’s image.
In Society
Being “one in Christ” enables us to oppose discrimination without denying cultural differences, and to pursue justice without replacing one prejudice with another.
Modern people easily build identity through comparison:
- I am valuable because I am more successful.
- I am secure because I am more popular.
- God loves me more because I am more holy.
This identity is unstable because someone will always be wealthier, smarter, more attractive, or more successful.
Identity in Christ provides a more stable foundation:
- I do not need to defeat others to prove myself.
- I do not need to deny myself because others surpass me.
- I can appreciate others’ gifts without envy.
- I can acknowledge limitations without falling into shame.
- I can grow in grace rather than live through comparison.
Your devotional reflection is very close to the passage, but two points can be added:
First, “God’s grace comes without discrimination to all people” should be clarified as “all who are united to Christ by faith.” The passage does not say everyone is automatically saved; it says salvation is not restricted by ethnicity, class, sex, or economic background, and all who trust Christ receive grace equally.
Second, “women are inferior in status to men” is not a truth Paul affirms here; it reflects a common hierarchy in ancient society. Paul’s declaration challenges systems that rank people as superior or inferior in Christ.
結語
Conclusion
The central message of Galatians 3:26–29 is:
In Christ, all believers are equally God’s children, equally clothed with Christ, equally included in Abraham’s promise, and equally heirs of God’s inheritance.
Therefore, we should neither exalt ourselves nor despise ourselves; we should not discriminate against others because of their differences, nor deny ourselves because of ours.
I belong to Christ, so I do not need comparison to establish my worth, and I must not use comparison to deny another’s dignity. As God’s child, I am called to make the unity found in Christ visible in family, church, work, and society.
