Scripture: 1 Peter 1:20–25
“Having purified your souls by obedience to the truth for sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.”
First Peter chapter 1 moves from God’s election, Christ’s redemption, living hope, and the call to holiness toward a concrete and indispensable result: people reborn through the gospel must become a community that sincerely loves one another.
Love is not an optional addition to salvation, nor something only naturally gentle people can achieve; it is the life-fruit that ought to grow from obeying the truth and being born again through God’s word.
The Gospel First Brings Us to God
Verses 20–21 first place the focus on Christ.
Christ was foreknown before the foundation of the world, yet was revealed in these last times for believers; God raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that our faith and hope are in God.
Therefore, Christian community love does not begin with “we have compatible personalities,” but with the same Christ, the same cross, and the same resurrection hope.
We can love brothers and sisters not because every believer is easy to get along with, nor because we always receive understanding and response from them.
We can love because God first loved us in Christ and brought us together into His household.
Obeying Truth Produces Sincere Love
Verse 22 says that believers purify their souls through “obedience to the truth” so that they may have “sincere brotherly love.”
The “truth” here is not an abstract principle, but the gospel proclaimed to them: Jesus Christ suffered for sin, rose from the dead, and calls people to repent, trust Him, and belong to Him.
Obeying the gospel is not merely accepting a set of ideas intellectually; it includes leaving behind the old self-centered life and entering a new life centered on God and others.
Therefore, sincere love for brothers and sisters is one of the most visible evidences of the gospel in relationships.
“Sincere” does not mean perfect and without conflict; it means without hypocrisy, manipulation, or a spiritual mask.
Sincere love does not exist only when the other person is useful, supportive, or affirming.
Sincere love means that when another person is weak, failing, difficult, unable to repay, or inconvenient, we still refuse to treat them as a burden or a tool.
What Does “Love Earnestly” Mean?
Peter does not merely say “love one another,” but says to “love one another earnestly from a pure heart.”
The Greek word ektenōs, translated “earnestly,” carries the sense of stretching out fully and persisting without slackening; it is not cold, formal, or merely verbal love, but love that costs something and actively reaches outward.
This does not mean we must exhaust ourselves or meet every expectation of everyone without boundaries.
The earnest love Peter describes begins with a pure heart; its purpose is not gaining another’s approval, building one’s spiritual image, or controlling others, but seeking the other person’s genuine good and God’s glory.
Therefore, sometimes love is quiet listening.
Sometimes love is interceding for someone.
Sometimes love is providing a meal, a ride, or concrete practical help.
Sometimes love is honestly and gently naming what is wrong.
Sometimes love also means setting healthy boundaries and refusing to enable harm, manipulation, deceit, or ongoing injustice.
The Seed of New Birth and the Foundation for Love
Verse 23 explains why believers can love one another: because they have been born again.
This new birth is not from perishable seed, but from imperishable seed—the living and enduring word of God.
Peter compares human life to grass and flowers: grass withers, flowers fade, and the beauty, ability, reputation, achievements, wealth, and status people boast in cannot last forever.
But God’s word endures forever, and this enduring word is the gospel preached to believers.
This means that unity and love in the church should not rest on shared age, social status, cultural background, political views, similar personalities, common interests, or mutual advantage.
All these factors can change, disappear, or even become sources of division.
The church’s truly imperishable common foundation is the same gospel, the same risen Christ, and the same word of God that gives new birth.[4][5][6]
How Should We Love Brothers and Sisters Around Us?
First, replace superficial harmony with truthfulness.
Do not merely say “peace” when meeting at church while criticizing, comparing, passing stories, or coldly ignoring the person behind their back.
Sincere love includes guarding another person’s reputation and communicating directly, gently, and appropriately when there is a problem.
Second, replace vague promises with concrete action.
Rather than only saying, “I will pray for you,” actually note the person’s need and check in a week later; if able, offer specific help as well.
Third, replace rushing to teach with listening.
When a brother or sister is grieving, failing, or struggling, do not rush to provide answers, verses, or correction.
First hear their true story and accompany them in bringing the pain before God.
Fourth, replace long-term scorekeeping with forgiveness and restoration.
Love does not mean pretending that harm never happened, but it refuses to let resentment become the master of the relationship.
Where safety and appropriateness permit, pursue reconciliation through truthfulness, repentance, accountability, and healthy boundaries.
Fifth, replace exploitation and control with respect and protection.
Do not view brothers and sisters merely as tools to meet your needs, support your position, complete church work, or increase your influence.
Earnest love asks, “How can I promote this person’s good in Christ today?”
Reflection and Prayer
Do I love only those brothers and sisters who are easy to get along with, share my background, agree with me, or can help me?
Have I mistaken “love” for surface-level peace, causing me to avoid honest communication, necessary boundaries, or appropriate restoration?
Is there a brother or sister near me who needs concrete love from me—an honest greeting, intercession, a meal, practical help, quiet companionship, or a truthful and gentle conversation?
Father, thank You for loving me first in Christ, giving me new birth through Your living and enduring word, and bringing me into Your household.
Purify my heart, so that I do not treat brothers and sisters with pretense, comparison, self-interest, or control.
Teach me to love earnestly from a pure heart: to speak in truth, accompany in mercy, act courageously when needed, and pursue appropriate restoration and peace amid conflict.
May our community not only proclaim the gospel, but let people see through our love for one another the power of the living and enduring word.
