The point is not to teach people to “be better,” but this: everyone has sinned, everyone needs grace, and God in Jesus Christ takes the initiative to forgive, heal, and renew.
The Core Statement
All have sinned—this is not meant to shame anyone, but to name a problem we share: measured against God’s perfect holiness, justice, love, and truth, no one can claim a life that has never fallen short toward God or others, whether in thought, motive, word, deed, or good left undone.
Scripture says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Paul goes on to explain that this condition “entered the world through one man”—Adam—not because everyone personally re-enacts that first act, but because everyone shares in its broken consequences.
It does not mean everyone is equally cruel, conscienceless, or unworthy of love; it means the brokenness runs not only through society and environment but through every human heart.
At the same time, God declares His love for everyone: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” He has prepared salvation for sinners in Christ.
The Concept Map
| Term | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Original sin | A shared condition into which every person is born: fallen, estranged from God, with a wounded nature inclined toward sin | Not that every infant personally repeats Adam and Eve’s original act |
| Actual sin | The real choices a person makes in thought, word, deed, and good withheld | Not that every fleeting bad thought already counts as actual sin |
| Salvation | God’s initiative in Christ to forgive guilt, reconcile people to Himself, and begin renewing their lives | Not a license to keep sinning, not a reward earned by self-discipline alone, and not something a single declaration exempts from ongoing practice |
Humans were originally created in God’s image and were good, possessing dignity, reason, conscience, love, and the capacity to choose.
Sin is not God making people bad.
After humanity turned from God in freedom, that image became like a cracked, dust-covered mirror—it still reflects light, but the reflection is distorted.
The more accurate description is neither “humans are inherently good” nor “inherently evil,” but this: humans were created good, yet after the fall our nature is wounded and inclined to sin. Dignity and conscience remain, but we cannot fully resolve the problem of sin on our own.
Three images can help you remember this together: original sin is like a polluted spring, a root disease, or a tree’s root; actual sin is like the tainted water that flows out, the symptoms that appear, or the bad fruit that grows.
Original sin explains why sin is so universal; actual sin explains why each person remains responsible for the evil they embrace, cultivate, or carry out.
How to Talk About This With Others
Lead with love and need before responsibility; clear up misunderstandings before turning to the cross.
Use whichever of these three versions fits the time you have.
Twenty Seconds
Christianity says everyone needs salvation not because you are worthless, but because no one can reach God’s perfect holiness and love on their own.
God has not given up on us; in Jesus, He Himself bore the cost of forgiveness.
One Minute
People are not robots; God gave humanity real freedom, which is what makes love genuine.
After our first parents misused that freedom, freedom remained but weakened: people can still do good and remain accountable, yet are more prone to self-centeredness and cannot will themselves into being sinless.
Education, law, and self-discipline all matter, but none of them can fully remove guilt already incurred or repair, at the root, our relationship with God.
That is why salvation is grace: Christ was fully human, sinless, and God’s Son; on the cross He bore the death and brokenness sin causes, and His resurrection declares that sin and death do not have the final word.
Two Minutes: “What About Babies? Do Good People Sin Too?”
Original sin does not mean every child is equally bad; it means no one starts life from a spiritually neutral, fully healthy state.
A person who has never broken the law can still harbor pride, envy, indifference, dishonesty, greed, or withhold help they were able to give.
Sin is not only “doing wrong”; it is also failing to live out the love and goodness God intends for us.
Christ’s salvation addresses both sides at once: the estrangement and wounded nature of original sin, and the real wrongdoing and guilt of actual sin.
When facing temptation, this line can help: a fleeting thought is usually not yet actual sin; deliberately embracing it, nurturing it, enjoying it, and choosing to act on it is what crosses into actual sin; turning it into hurtful words or actions is clearly actual sin.
Original sin makes temptation more frequent, but it is never an excuse of “I was forced to sin.”
Received, Not Purchased
Forgiveness cannot be earned by good works, but it does call for a genuine response.
You can think of the path in five steps:
- Acknowledge that sin includes me, too.
- Trust in Jesus’s death and resurrection, not merely treat Him as a moral teacher.
- Repentance is a change of direction, not just a feeling of guilt.
- Be baptized and enter church life as a public response.
- After falling, confess again, receive forgiveness again, and keep following.
Different traditions emphasize the details differently: Catholic, Orthodox, and many Anglican traditions specifically teach that baptism forgives original sin and any actual sin committed before baptism; after baptism, Catholics address actual sin through the sacrament of reconciliation, or confession.
Most Protestant traditions, such as Baptist, Presbyterian, and Methodist churches, emphasize that justification by faith is a one-time, complete standing. It does not require a sacrament to repeatedly process confessed sin, but calls for ongoing, direct confession to God, lived out through pastoral care, mutual accountability in community, and continuing sanctification.
Temptation continues even after coming to faith.
Practical steps include recognizing envy, anger, fear, or excuse-making early; turning back to God at the first sign; removing yourself from triggering environments; replacing evil with honesty, forgiveness, generosity, and service; and practicing the new life through Scripture reading, prayer, worship, communion, and community.
Where addiction, violence, trauma, serious depression, or self-harm is involved, seek help from both pastoral care and licensed medical professionals at the same time.
A Closing Line You Can Use
After talking with someone, you do not need to lay out another doctrinal system—this line is enough:
I was made for good, yet I am now fallen and wounded. I have both a bent toward sin and real choices I have made, so I need forgiveness.
God has not given up on sinners. Whoever confesses, turns, trusts, and follows Christ can be reconciled to God and grow, by the Spirit, into truer freedom, holiness, and love.
