Crucifixion resolves both original sin and personal sins for the following four reasons.
- 它符合舊約「掛在木頭上是被咒詛」的預表,處理了原罪帶來的咒詛;
It fulfills the Old Testament type that “hanging on a tree is a curse,” addressing the curse brought by original sin; - 它的刑罰性質——公開羞恥、無法自救、尊嚴剝奪、與神隔絕——精準對應了罪在各個層面造成的崩壞;
Its punitive nature—public shame, inability to save oneself, stripped dignity, separation from God—precisely corresponds to the breakdown caused by sin at every level; - 耶穌作為完全的人,真實經歷了這一切;作為完全的神,祂的受苦具有無限價值,足以涵蓋所有人的罪;
As fully human, Jesus truly experienced all of this; as fully divine, His suffering carries infinite worth, sufficient to cover the sins of all people; - 祂不是突然死亡,而是完整走完了「罪導致死亡」的全過程,所以罪的權勢在祂身上被徹底耗盡,復活才顯明罪與死已經被征服。
He did not die suddenly, but walked the entire process of “sin leading to death,” so sin’s power was fully exhausted in Him—and the resurrection then reveals that sin and death have been conquered.
Before going further, two questions must be laid out clearly first, or the whole framework will feel unsupported.
Question 1: “How can one person’s (Jesus’) death ‘count’ as resolving another person’s (mine) sin? Does this make legal or logical sense?”
Question 2: “Why does ‘crucifixion’ specifically—this particular method of death—correspond to both ‘original sin’ and ‘personal sin’?”
These two questions correspond respectively to “the mechanism of imputation” and “the symbolic precision of the punishment.” Without either one, the whole theology becomes mere metaphor rather than logic.
To answer whether “substitution” is legitimate, a purely religious answer (“because God loves you”) is not enough—it must be unpacked across three levels: legal, existential, and ontological.
Level One: Legal Logic — “Representation” and “Federal Headship”
This is the logic Paul uses in Romans chapter 5.
Analogy: A president signs an international treaty on behalf of the whole nation. Once signed, all citizens are bound by it—even though you never signed personally, the president’s decision is legally “counted as” your decision.
Application: Adam is humanity’s “first representative.” His sin causes all humanity to be “counted” guilty and to bear the consequence of death (this is the imputation of “original sin”).
Jesus—whom Paul calls “the last Adam”—as representative of the “new humanity,” was perfectly obedient unto death. For anyone “in Christ,” His obedience is “counted as” your obedience, and His death is “counted as” the penalty you have already borne.
So the logic is: guilt can be transferred through a “representative relationship”—not the illegitimate scenario of “person A taking the blame for person B,” but a legal unity between representative and represented.
Level Two: Existential Logic — “Solidarity” and “Participation”
This leans more toward Eastern Orthodox and Augustinian thought.
Analogy: When a team loses the final, a fan feels “we lost.” You never played, but because you identify with the team, you “existentially” participate in that defeat.
Application: Humanity is not a collection of isolated atoms; we are an “organic whole” in Adam. Adam’s fall is like a rotten root—every branch decays with it. This is “existential solidarity.”
Jesus, in the incarnation, took on the exact same “human nature” as us. He is not an outside helper looking in—He truly became a brother of the same family.
The key logic: when Jesus died, He died “carrying the whole new humanity” with Him. Anyone united to Him existentially experiences that death “in Him”—so the penalty has already been executed in Him, and you are “existentially one” with Him.
Level Three: Ontological Logic — “Infinite Worth Paying an Infinite Debt”
This draws on Anselm’s Satisfaction Theory and is highly philosophical.
Analogy: If you damage a bicycle on the street, a modest payment suffices. But if you spit on a king’s crown, that isn’t about “repair cost”—it’s about “offense to dignity.” The penalty is infinite because the one offended holds infinite worth.
Application: Sin is grave not merely because of the wrong act itself, but because the one offended is the eternal God of infinite dignity—thus requiring an “infinite penalty” to repay.
Human beings are finite creatures; even dying ten thousand times would still be of “finite” value, unable to pay an “infinite” debt.
Jesus is God become man. His humanity makes death possible; His divinity gives that death “infinite worth.” Thus His one death has value sufficient to repay the accumulated infinite debt of all humanity.
So the logic is not simply “a good person dying for a bad one”—it is “the infinite Person of God, within human nature, using a life of infinite worth, bearing the actual pain of eternal death in our place.” Because the worth is infinite, it is “exactly enough, neither more nor less.”
Level Four: Philosophical Supplement — “Love’s Essence Is Substitution”
If the legal metaphor doesn’t land, pure ethics offers another route: genuine love, by its nature, is “bearing another’s burden.”
A mother staying awake for her child “substitutes” for the child’s exhaustion; a friend paying your debt “substitutes” for your financial burden.
The consequence of sin is “separation from the source of life”—a kind of spiritual death. God essentially says: “I do not want you to bear this eternal isolation forever. Since you, as a creature, could never return to Me on your own, I, the Creator, will personally enter your condition and bear that moment of ‘separation’ for you.”
When Jesus cried out on the cross, “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?”—that was Him substituting for us in bearing the real pain of “separation from God.”
The damage caused by original sin and personal sins actually falls into distinct “wound types,” and every punitive feature of crucifixion happens to match those wounds one by one—not by coincidence, but by design.
Corresponding to Original Sin: Curse, Exile, Shame
Original sin brought three things: being cursed (Genesis 3), being exiled from Eden, and the shame of nakedness. Crucifixion corresponds to each of these precisely.
The Old Testament states plainly, “he who is hung on a tree is cursed by God” (Deuteronomy 21:23), and Paul quotes this directly in Galatians 3:13 to say Jesus “became a curse for us”—the wooden cross itself is the legal sign of “curse,” not just any instrument of execution.
Jesus was crucified “outside the city gate” (Hebrews 13:12), directly mirroring Adam and Eve being “driven out” of paradise—the cross reenacts “exile,” with Him taking our place in that position outside.
Crucifixion was the ancient world’s most public, most exposed, most humiliating execution—the condemned hung almost naked on display. This directly corresponds to Adam and Eve’s shame at discovering “they were naked” after sinning.
Corresponding to Personal Sin: Helplessness, Powerlessness, Slow Conscious Suffering
The defining trait of personal sin is “knowing one is wrong yet being powerless to save oneself”—and crucifixion’s process concretizes and prolongs exactly that powerlessness.
The crucified person’s hands and feet are fixed in place—totally unable to escape, resist, or end the suffering on their own. This corresponds to every sinner being “bound by their own sin” yet unable to break free unaided.
Death by crucifixion is slow (lasting hours or even days), with the condemned fully conscious through asphyxiation, blood loss, and organ failure—corresponding to how sin’s consequences unfold not as an instant punishment but as a long, conscious, gradually corroding process.
Crucifixion involves bloodshed, and the Old Testament establishes the principle that “the life is in the blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin” (Leviticus 17:11)—not because God delights in blood, but because blood represents life, and sin’s outcome is precisely the ending of life. An animal’s shed blood symbolizes “one life ending in place of another,” but that was only a sign; what is truly effective is the blood Jesus shed—a completely sinless human life, which, because He is also God, carries eternal and infinite worth, sufficient to pay in full the sin-debt of every person across all generations.
Crucifixion was jointly decreed by Jewish religious leaders and Roman political power—symbolizing that the guilt of “all humanity” (religious and secular, Jew and Gentile alike) converges on Him, corresponding to the universality that “all have sinned” (Romans 3:23), not merely one particular category of wrongdoing.
The Reality of Divine Suffering
Jesus is God, but He did not suffer through “the impassible nature of divinity”—He suffered “within His humanity.” Divinity itself cannot feel pain or die, but in the incarnation Jesus took on complete humanity, including body, emotion, will, and finite consciousness.
His suffering was not performance—it was real humanity bearing real pain and death. Divinity “sustained” His humanity throughout, keeping Him from collapsing before the mission was complete, but it removed none of the actual felt pain.
His cry, “My God, why have You forsaken Me?” is precisely the pain of His humanity experiencing a kind of “functional separation” from the divine—a genuine experience of isolation. Because His suffering was real, His substitution is real, not a theological performance.
Adam, as humanity’s representative, brought all mankind into sin and death; Christ, as the new humanity’s representative, brings all who trust in Him into righteousness and life.
Because He is God, His death carries infinite worth, sufficient to repay the guilt of all people; because He became man, His death can truly substitute for you and me.
God does not violate the law—within the legal framework, as our representative, He personally bore every legal claim against you and me. And the death He chose—crucifixion—matched, in every detail, the curse, exile, and shame brought by original sin, as well as the helplessness, humiliation, and conscious suffering caused by personal sin.
