Wittgenstein, Philosophy of Language, and Biblical Truth

Wittgenstein’s philosophy of language helps Christians discern more carefully whether a statement reports facts, expresses feelings, gives an instruction, makes a commitment, or uses vague religious language to evade reality.

Scripture goes further: the ultimate ground of language is not human logic or social convention, but the God of truth, His revelation, and Christ the Word made flesh.

1. Core Conclusion

Wittgenstein’s philosophy is commonly divided into two major phases: early and later.

His early thought, represented by the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, mainly asks: “How can language meaningfully describe the world?”

His later thought, represented by the Philosophical Investigations, mainly asks: “How do people actually use language in concrete life?”

The Tractatus holds that the world is the totality of facts, and propositions present or picture possible facts through a logical structure.

Later Wittgenstein emphasizes that a word’s meaning is mainly determined by its use within particular contexts, activities, rules, and shared forms of life.

Wittgenstein helps people clarify language; Scripture calls people to use language with truth, love, reverence, and responsibility.

2. Early Wittgenstein: Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus

1. The World Is the Totality of Facts

Wittgenstein says, “The world is everything that is the case.” The world is not merely composed of objects, but of facts, events, and relations.

For example, a screw, a design drawing, or a software button by itself is not yet a complete fact.

“The diameter of screws in a particular batch exceeds the upper specification limit” is a fact that can be verified, discussed, and acted upon.

Tractatus 1.1 states that the world is the totality of facts, not of things.[1][2]

2. Propositions Are Pictures of Reality

Early Wittgenstein develops the “picture theory”: a meaningful proposition can structurally represent a possible reality.

This does not mean that a sentence must copy the world like a photograph; rather, it must clearly express people, events, objects, and their relations.

Vague statement: “The project has problems.”

Clearer statement: “The UI design due on Wednesday lacks interaction states for login, payment confirmation, and retry after failure, which blocks test-case review.”

The latter includes timing, objects, specific gaps, and business impact, so it better supports shared judgment and action.

Tractatus 4.01 says that a proposition is a picture or model of reality.[1][3]

3. The Limits of Language and the Limits of the World

In Tractatus 5.6, Wittgenstein writes: “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.”[1][4]

This does not mean that only things I can speak about exist.

A more careful meaning is that without adequate concepts, vocabulary, and modes of expression, a person finds it difficult to recognize, reflect on, or address a problem together with others.

For example, if one merely says, “My spiritual life has been poor lately,” the problem remains vague.

If one can say, “This week I stopped regular Bible reading because of work stress and used short videos to avoid anxiety,” one can move toward repentance, prayer, seeking help, and forming concrete practices.

4. What Can and Cannot Be Said

Early Wittgenstein holds that what can be meaningfully said should be able to express a possible fact in logical form.

At the end of the Tractatus, he states: “Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.”[5][6]

This does not mean that ethics, religion, beauty, love, or the meaning of life have no value.

It warns people not to disguise what cannot be clearly explained or verified as knowledge as precise as engineering specifications or scientific data.

For theological study, this is a reminder not to equate a personal impression directly with a clear command from God.

Nor should one present speculation, traditional preference, or a theological position as a truth explicitly taught by Scripture.

3. Later Wittgenstein: Philosophical Investigations

1. Meaning Is Use

Later Wittgenstein no longer treats language mainly as a tool for picturing facts.

He argues that the meaning of a word lies chiefly in its use in actual life.

The same word can have different functions in different contexts.

For example, in Romans, “faith” is closely related to justification, grace, and trust in Christ.

In James, genuine faith must be demonstrated through concrete actions.

If “faith” is understood merely in the modern everyday sense of “believing that I will succeed,” one may depart from the biblical context.

Later Wittgenstein uses “language-games” to show that language has diverse functions, such as commanding, questioning, praying, promising, comforting, reporting, praising, and warning.[7][8]

2. Language-Games and Forms of Life

Language-games do not mean that language is unserious or merely playful.

They mean that human language always operates within activities of life, social practices, and shared rules.

For example, in quality management, “critical defect,” “acceptance passed,” “root cause,” and “corrective action” must have shared definitions.

If everyone privately defines terms, quality systems, test reports, and engineering-change processes lose consistency.

Likewise, “grace,” “repentance,” “salvation,” “sanctification,” and “gospel” in the church cannot be defined arbitrarily by personal feeling.

3. Rule-Following and Community

Later Wittgenstein argues that language must have rules that can be learned, shared, and corrected.

Genuine language is not a private code inside the mind that no one else can examine.

This has important implications for Bible study: personal devotion is valuable, but “I feel that this passage means this” cannot be the final standard.

Interpretation should be tested by the text, context, historical background, the whole Bible, the church community, and reliable interpretive resources.

The Bereans examined the Scriptures daily to test whether the teaching they received was true, providing believers with a model of discernment.

4. Main Comparison Between Wittgenstein and Scripture

ThemeWittgenstein’s InsightBiblical Revelation
Language and worldLanguage shapes the range of reality people can understand and addressGod creates the world by His word and reveals truth to humanity
TruthPropositions must meaningfully present possible factsGod is the source of truth, and Christ is truth itself
Word meaningMeaning comes primarily from use and contextScripture must be understood in context and within the whole of revelation
Rules and communityLanguage depends on shared practices and rulesThe church grows through truth, love, and mutual exhortation
Limits of languageWhat cannot be said should not be disguised as precise knowledgeGod transcends humanity but has revealed what people need to know
Goal of languageClarify confusion and dissolve false philosophical problemsGlorify God, witness to Christ, build others up, and proclaim the gospel

1. Language Is Not Ultimate Truth; God Is

Wittgenstein shows that misusing language can create false problems, mistaken oppositions, and confused conclusions.

But Scripture reveals that truth is ultimately not a set of human linguistic rules, but God’s own character and His self-revelation in Christ.

Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

Jesus also prays to the Father: “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”

2. The Biblical “Word” Transcends Abstract Language

The Gospel of John does not say that Jesus is merely a concept, sound, or philosophical principle.

It proclaims that “the Word became flesh,” showing that God’s truth entered history, relationship, suffering, redemption, and resurrection.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”

3. Truth Must Walk with Love

Scripture does not merely require people to say correct things; it also requires them to speak with the right heart and purpose.

“Speaking the truth in love” does not replace truth with love, nor does it use truth as a weapon to harm people.

It requires truth and love, accuracy and grace, responsibility and edification to coexist.

“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”

Ephesians 4:29.[11]
