September 28 Devotional: Sharing in Christ’s Sufferings9

First Peter 4:12–19 teaches believers how to understand suffering for Christ: do not treat trials as proof that God has abandoned you, and do not romanticize every form of suffering as martyrdom. Discern why you are suffering, do not be ashamed when suffering for Christ, and entrust your life to the faithful Creator.

Peter calls the suffering believers face a “fiery trial.” This does not mean they necessarily did something wrong, nor that God delights in pain; it means faith is tested, revealed, and refined under pressure.

For early Christians, this suffering could include:

  • Being misunderstood or slandered because of their Christian identity.
  • Being excluded for refusing idolatry and certain social customs.
  • Losing relationships, work opportunities, or security because of faith.
  • Facing threats from authorities or social pressure.

Peter is not telling believers to pretend pain does not exist. He is saying, “Do not regard this as utterly unexpected.” Those who follow the suffering Christ may at times share in opposition directed against Him.

Verse 13 says believers can rejoice because they share in Christ’s sufferings. This does not mean people should enjoy bullying, abuse, or oppression, nor does it forbid seeking protection and justice.

“Rejoicing” is possible because suffering is not the final outcome; when Christ’s glory is revealed, God will reinterpret and vindicate present faithfulness.

Christians can simultaneously:

  • Acknowledge that suffering is real.
  • Grieve, weep, and seek help.
  • Oppose injustice and protect victims.
  • Continue trusting God’s presence and coming glory.

Verse 15 provides an essential balance. Peter says that no one should suffer as a murderer, thief, evildoer, or meddler. Not every form of suffering can therefore be called “suffering for the Lord.”

Suffering Because of Christ

  • Workplace pressure for refusing to falsify information.
  • Mockery or exclusion for maintaining faith.
  • Loss for protecting the vulnerable, speaking truth, or refusing injustice.

Suffering Because of One’s Own Wrongdoing

  • Legal consequences for deception, violence, or theft.
  • Damaged relationships because of pride and meddling.
  • Needless conflict caused by harsh or unwise speech.

“Meddler” is also significant. It may refer to crossing appropriate boundaries and interfering in matters outside one’s responsibility while disguising such interference as zeal for truth.

Genuine suffering for Christ requires two things: the suffering results from faithfulness to Christ, and the sufferer’s own conduct is not contrary to Christ’s character.

Verse 16 says that if anyone suffers as a Christian, they should not be ashamed of the name but glorify God in that name.

The name “Christian” may originally have carried an external label or negative judgment; Peter redefines it as an identity belonging to Christ, confessing Christ, and following Christ.

Today, this identity is not:

  • A religious consumer.
  • A morally superior person.
  • A person entitled to judge everyone else.

而是:

Rather, it is:

  • A person who has received grace, repented, and is being renewed.
  • A person who confesses Jesus as Lord in daily life.
  • A person willing to represent Christ through truth, love, and holiness.

Verse 17 does not mean believers are first condemned. It means God begins His purifying, disciplining, and testing work within His own household. Suffering reveals whether the church’s faith is genuine and exposes pride, hypocrisy, and dependence on the world.

This reminds the church:

  • Do not criticize the world while refusing self-examination.
  • Do not treat persecution as automatic proof of being right.
  • Do not ask God only to change society; allow Him to change the church first.
  • Do not place the church’s reputation above holiness, truth, and love.

“If the righteous is scarcely saved” does not mean God’s salvation is unreliable. It means salvation involves genuine faith, repentance, endurance, and perseverance rather than cheap religious slogans.

Verse 17 raises a serious question: “What will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?” It points to God’s final righteous judgment. Christianity cannot say that all paths lead equally to God or deny the seriousness of rejecting the gospel.

This truth should not become an occasion for gloating, threatening others, or claiming superiority. Peter raises the question so believers will take the gospel more seriously, pray more urgently for those who do not believe, and live more faithfully as witnesses.

Christians can hold together:

  • God’s judgment is real.
  • God’s mercy is real.
  • People need repentance and faith in the gospel.
  • Our role is to witness and invite, not to replace God as judge.

1. Pray Specifically for Family and Friends

Do not pray only, “Lord, save everyone.” Pray for specific people by name, including their wounds, questions, and circumstances.

2. Live a Credible Gospel

Unbelievers observe not only what we say but how we handle money, power, conflict, failure, and suffering.

3. Share Hope Gently

You can say simply:

I believe in Jesus not because I am better than others, but because I know I need forgiveness and salvation. I believe He died and rose for sinners, gives me new hope, and teaches me not to live through revenge or despair in suffering.

4. Listen Rather Than Pressure

Ask about the person’s questions, experiences, and objections. Do not treat people as opponents to defeat. The gospel invites people home to God, but the invitation cannot replace the Spirit’s work in the heart.

5. Serve Through Action

When someone is unemployed, ill, lonely, or grieving, practical presence and help can make the gospel visible.

Verse 19 summarizes the passage. “Entrust” carries the sense of placing something valuable in the hands of someone trustworthy: believers place their lives, reputations, futures, and final destiny in God’s care.[3]

Entrusting is not passive waiting; it is “continuing to do good”:

  • Entrust your soul to God while working faithfully.
  • Entrust your reputation to God while speaking truthfully.
  • Entrust justice to God while taking lawful and appropriate action.
  • Entrust the future to God while loving and serving today.

You may pray:

Lord Jesus, thank You that I may be known as one who belongs to You. Keep me from being ashamed of You because of the world’s opinion, and from misusing the Christian name through superiority. Make me gentle when misunderstood, upright under pressure, and able to glorify You in suffering. May my life honor this name.

“Leading” does not mean manipulating others or taking responsibility for what only God can accomplish. You can faithfully do five things:

    Pray for the person.
    Listen to the person’s story.
Bear witness through a consistent life.
Share the gospel at an appropriate time.
Invite the person toward Christian community and Scripture.

結語

Conclusion

First Peter 4:12–19 does not tell us to desire suffering; it teaches us to know whose we are, why we suffer, and how to respond when suffering comes.

Suffering for Christ is not shameful but may be the cost of faithfulness; suffering because of our own sin is not glory but a call to repentance and responsibility.

Before God’s final judgment arrives, the church’s strongest witness is a people who suffer without becoming bitter, endure misunderstanding without retaliation, uphold truth while continuing to love.

Lord, keep me from being ashamed of the Christian identity and from becoming proud because of it. Help me continue doing good in suffering, entrust my life to the faithful Creator, and lead those who do not yet believe toward You through a true, gentle, and faithful life.
