October 10 Devotional: Where Is Your Blessing?10

Galatians 4:15–16 records a painful change in relationship. The Galatians once loved Paul so deeply that they would have given him their own eyes, yet when he continued telling them the truth, they began to regard him as an enemy. The passage reminds us that love cannot be measured only by present feelings, and truth must not be sacrificed to preserve a relationship.

The “blessing” in verse 15 can refer to the Galatians’ initial joy, gratitude, and deep affection for Paul because of the gospel.

They had received Paul as God’s messenger, even as Christ Jesus. This does not mean they worshiped Paul; it means they welcomed the gospel messenger with great respect and love.

Paul’s question, “Where has your blessing gone?” is not an attempt to manipulate their emotions. He asks them to remember whether the joy they first received through the gospel has been replaced by false teaching and prejudice against him.

Paul says that if possible, the Galatians would have torn out their eyes and given them to him. This is an extreme and affectionate expression showing their love and gratitude at that time.

Some interpreters suggest that Paul’s illness may have involved his eyes, but the text does not say so clearly. This remains a possible inference, not a certain conclusion.

Whatever Paul’s illness was, the Galatians did not reject him because of his weakness; this was a beautiful witness to their initial love.

Verse 16 asks, “Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?”

Paul was not speaking to hurt the Galatians. He was confronting teaching that made circumcision and observance of the Mosaic Law necessary for full belonging to God. He had to show that such teaching denied the sufficiency of Christ’s cross and would return them to slavery under the Law.

Sometimes people do not change when they hear the truth. Instead, because the truth exposes a cherished error, they turn against the person who speaks it.

This does not mean that everyone who opposes us does so because of truth. Sometimes we may speak rashly, proudly, or hurtfully, and others’ opposition may be justified.

Paul’s example reminds us that faithfully speaking truth can cost us human approval.

Loving people does not mean never saying anything uncomfortable; speaking truth does not mean being rude, arrogant, or humiliating.

Healthy relationships need both:

TruthLove
Names error and dangerRespects human dignity
Refuses compromise for approvalDoes not delight in harm
Helps people return to the gospelAccompanies people through change
Accepts the cost of being misunderstoodIs willing to listen and repair relationships

Paul did not conceal the truth to preserve the Galatians’ affection, nor did he stop loving them because they had distanced themselves from him.

Human relationships change easily because they are affected by:

  • Misunderstanding and lack of communication.
  • Hurt, disappointment, and unmet expectations.
  • The influence of third parties and misinformation.
  • Power, envy, and comparison.
  • Human needs for approval, control, and security.

The Galatians’ change was not because Paul suddenly harmed them, but because false teaching influenced them and made them doubt Paul and the gospel.

This reminds us not to build all relationships on present feelings, nor to conclude that no one is trustworthy after one painful experience.

After being hurt, setting boundaries, reducing exposure, and seeking safety and support is wise and necessary.

However, refusing all relationships after one or more painful experiences may turn self-protection into a prison of isolation.

A healthy response is not “I will never trust anyone again,” but:

  • I can trust gradually, with wisdom and boundaries.
  • I can discern which people are safe for deeper relationship.
  • I can bring my wounds to God rather than handle them only through avoidance.
  • I can forgive without immediately restoring the same level of closeness.

The relationship between pastors and congregations should not rest only on charisma, applause, or personal need, but on the gospel, truth, mutual respect, and shared discipleship.

How Should Congregations Treat Pastors?

  • Remember that pastors are human, weak, tired, and capable of error.
  • Pray for pastors rather than appearing only when ministry problems arise.
  • Raise disagreement privately, specifically, and respectfully.
  • Discern whether a pastor is faithful to Scripture rather than whether he pleases you.
  • Do not deify pastors or completely reject them after one disappointment.

How Should Pastors Treat Congregations?

  • Preach truth without humiliation, manipulation, or superiority.
  • Be willing to receive accountability and correction.
  • Do not make human approval the foundation of ministry.
  • Continue praying and serving for the flock’s good even when misunderstood.

1. Examine a Strained Relationship

Ask yourself:

  • Am I treating someone as an enemy because they told me the truth?
  • Am I avoiding necessary truth because I fear losing the relationship?
  • Do I need to apologize, clarify, set boundaries, or seek third-party help?

2. Pray for a Pastor or Spiritual Mentor

Pray specifically:

Lord, keep my pastor faithful to truth and give him gentleness and wisdom. When he says something I dislike but that is biblical, help me listen humbly. When he is weak, keep me from responding with contempt; help me walk with him in love and appropriate boundaries.

3. Choose One Action Where Truth and Love Go Together

例如:

For example:

  • Tell someone who hurt you how you feel without humiliating them.
  • Apologize to someone you hurt instead of merely explaining yourself.
  • Thank a pastor while honestly raising one specific concern.
  • Pray for someone from whom you are estranged and take one non-manipulative, non-retaliatory step toward repair.

結語

Conclusion

Galatians 4:15–16 reminds us that feelings change, but truth should not be sacrificed because of changing feelings; truth may displease people, but love should not disappear because of it.

True love does not say only what others want to hear; true truth is not used to humiliate or manipulate people. Both must be joined in Christ: speak honestly, act gently, accept the cost, and seek restoration.

Lord, keep me from abandoning truth because I fear losing a relationship, and from losing love because I uphold truth. When I am misunderstood, help me continue to love; when I need to hear the truth, give me a humble heart to listen.
