Galatians 4:12–14 records the deep relationship between Paul and the Galatian believers. Paul came to them because of a bodily illness yet preached the gospel there; they did not despise him for his weakness but received him as a messenger of God. The passage reminds us that gospel relationships involve more than delivering information; they include receiving one another amid weakness, illness, and inconvenience.
Paul says, “Become as I am, for I also became as you are.” He is not asking the Galatians to imitate his Jewish culture, personality, or lifestyle. He is calling them to become like him in no longer seeking righteousness through legalism and religious rules, but relying solely on Christ’s grace.
Paul had set aside certain Jewish cultural practices for the sake of the gospel and entered the Gentiles’ world. Now the Galatians were being led to believe that they had to become Jewish and observe the Law before they could be complete Christians.
Paul’s appeal is therefore: “Do not return to the slavery of legalism. Become like me in receiving grace freely in Christ.”
Verse 13 says that Paul first preached the gospel to the Galatians because of a bodily illness. We do not know what illness he had. Some scholars suggest malaria, an eye condition, epilepsy, or a chronic disease, but Scripture does not specify, and speculation should not be treated as certainty.
The point of the passage is not to diagnose Paul’s illness but to show God’s providence:
- Paul’s plans may have been changed by illness.
- Illness brought pain, limitation, and inconvenience.
- Yet God used this seemingly obstructive situation to bring the gospel to Galatia.
This reminds us that weakness does not necessarily disqualify ministry. Sometimes God does not remove our weakness before using us; instead, He remains with us in it and accomplishes His work through us.
Verse 14 says that Paul’s bodily condition was a “trial” for the Galatians. This may refer to the burden of caring for a sick person, or to the social discomfort, prejudice, and inconvenience they had to face.
Yet they did not despise or reject Paul.
“Despise” and “reject” suggest that illness, disability, or appearance may have been viewed in that society as marks of shame, impurity, or unwelcome. The Galatians did not allow such prejudice to determine their attitude toward Paul.
Instead, they received him as a messenger of God, even as Christ Jesus.
This does not mean the Galatians believed Paul was Christ or worshiped him. It means they received the gospel messenger with great respect, love, and trust.
Your devotional question, “Have you treated your pastor well?” is a good application, but it needs to avoid two extremes.
On One Hand, Pastors Need Respect and Care
Pastors are human. They become tired, ill, wounded, criticized, and burdened. Believers can:
- Pray for pastors rather than speaking only when ministry problems arise.
- Thank pastors for faithful service.
- Respect pastors’ rest, family, and health boundaries.
- Raise disagreement privately, specifically, and constructively.
- Offer practical help when pastors are ill or wounded.
On the Other Hand, Pastors Are Not Above Accountability
“Like a messenger of God” does not mean pastors cannot be questioned or that churches must obey blindly.
A healthy church needs:
- Pastors teaching Scripture rather than ruling by personal preference.
- Clear accountability structures.
- Transparent handling of finances, power, and moral issues.
- Mechanisms to protect those who have been harmed.
Respecting pastors does not mean deifying them; loving pastors does not mean tolerating sin or injustice.
People often judge others’ value according to appearance, ability, health, and social status.
When someone appears weak, ill, unsuccessful, or different, others may feel uncomfortable and want to keep their distance.
The Galatians’ example challenges this reaction. They did not treat Paul’s illness as a reason to reject him; they allowed the gospel relationship to matter more than appearance and prejudice.
Psychologically, such reception brings healing: when people are no longer shamed for weakness but accepted and accompanied, they more easily regain trust, dignity, and hope.
1. Toward Pastors
Choose one concrete action today:
- Send a thank-you message to your pastor, naming how his ministry has helped you.
- Pray for your pastor’s health, family, and spiritual life.
- Offer practical help if your pastor is facing difficulty.
- If you disagree, communicate privately, respectfully, and specifically.
2. Toward the Weak
Ask yourself:
- Do I look down on people because of illness, disability, failure, or background?
- Do I welcome only people who are useful or presentable?
- Am I willing to make weak people feel safe rather than labeled?
3. Toward Your Own Weakness
Paul’s illness did not cancel his calling; your weakness does not necessarily cancel God’s work in your life.
You may pray:
Lord, keep me from giving up ministry because of my weakness and from looking down on others because of theirs. Use my limitations so that Your power and grace may be revealed in my life.
