Galatians 3:23–25 teaches that the Law has a real and important role in God’s plan of salvation, but it is not salvation itself and cannot replace Christ. The Law is like a temporary guardian who supervises and protects a child until Christ comes, so that people may be justified by faith.
The “faith” that has come in verses 23 and 25 does not mean that no one trusted God before. It refers to Christ’s coming, the accomplishment of redemption, and the arrival of the gospel age.
Old Testament believers were also accepted by God through grace and faith; however, before Christ came, the promise was still awaiting fulfillment. After Christ came, the promise was clearly and fully realized in Him.
Paul is not presenting two different methods of salvation—law before Christ and faith after Christ. God has always saved through promise and faith; after Christ came, the center of salvation was openly revealed.
The word translated “guardian” or “tutor” in verse 24 is paidagōgos. In ancient households, this was usually not a formal schoolteacher but a servant entrusted with supervising, disciplining, protecting, and bringing a child to the actual teacher.
The Law’s role therefore included:
- Restraining sin and disorder.
- Teaching Israel God’s demands for holiness and justice.
- Showing the seriousness of sin.
- Guarding God’s people until Christ came.
- Pointing toward Christ, who alone justifies and gives life.
The analogy also has a limit: the Law can supervise and expose, but it cannot give new birth; it can identify the disease but cannot heal it.
This is an important point of application. When Galatians says believers are no longer under the guardian, it primarily means that believers are no longer under the Mosaic Law as a covenant system and do not use law-keeping to obtain justification, acceptance, or salvation.
This does not mean:
- Christians may sin freely.
- God no longer cares about holiness, justice, and love.
- All biblical moral teaching is irrelevant to believers.
- Christians need no standards, responsibilities, or disciplines.
Later in Galatians, Paul calls believers to walk by the Spirit and love their neighbors. Christians are not without moral direction; they move from seeking righteousness through external rules to living out love by the Spirit.
The distinction can be stated this way:
| No longer under the Law | Still living according to God’s will |
|---|---|
| Not justified by rule-keeping | Pursuing holiness |
| Not obtaining identity through circumcision or festivals | Honoring God’s moral will |
| Not boasting in observance | Bearing the fruit of love by the Spirit |
| Not enslaved by condemning legalism | Practicing obedience within grace |
1. Legalism
Legalism says, “If I perform well enough, God will accept me.” It may appear in religious rules, ministry performance, moral comparison, or church traditions.
Legalism produces:
- Pride: I am more worthy than others.
- Fear: I am never sure I have done enough.
- Hypocrisy: maintaining an outward image.
- Condemnation: judging others by personal standards.
2. License
The opposite extreme says, “Since we are not justified by the Law, I can do whatever I want.” But Paul’s freedom is not surrender to sin; it is freedom from sin’s domination so that we can love God and others.
The gospel rejects both legalism and license:
We do not earn salvation through rules or treat grace as permission to sin; we live a new life by the Spirit from an identity already accepted in Christ.
Although Christians are not justified by the Mosaic Law, God’s Law can still function as:
1. A Mirror of Sin
It reveals pride, greed, sexual immorality, lies, and lack of love, preventing easy self-justification.
2. A Direction for Life
It helps us understand the value of justice, faithfulness, mercy, and love of neighbor.
3. A Sign Pointing to Christ
When we discover that we cannot reach God’s holiness through perfect obedience, we understand more deeply our need for Christ’s forgiveness and the Spirit’s renewal.
4. Protection Against Self-Centered Freedom
Christian freedom is not “I may harm others freely,” but “I am no longer controlled by self-centeredness and can choose love and goodness.”
The guardian image can also illuminate human development. A child needs external rules about when to return home, how to treat people, and what not to do; a mature person gradually internalizes values and chooses rightly even without supervision.
Spiritual maturity moves from:
- “I do not do it because I fear punishment.”
- “I love God and others, so I do not want to do what harms people.”
從:
From:
- “Will someone see me?”
- “Even if no one sees, I want to be honest before God.”
從:
From:
- “What does the church require me to do?”
- “How is the Spirit leading me to embody Christ’s love in this situation?”
This is not abandoning instruction; it is allowing instruction to become internalized as character and habit.
Ask yourself:
- Have I elevated certain church customs to a status Scripture does not give them?
- Do I judge others’ spirituality by outward performance?
- Do I compare myself with others in service, attendance, giving, or Bible reading?
- Do I keep adding religious burdens because I fear God will not accept me?
- Does my obedience produce love, humility, and compassion?
Healthy spiritual disciplines do not purchase God’s love; they help us enjoy the grace already received in Christ.
You do not need to become a perfect Christian before coming to God.
Nor do you need to complete every devotion, ministry duty, or moral requirement perfectly to earn God’s acceptance.
The foundation of the believer is:
- Christ has accomplished salvation for me.
- I am united with Christ through faith.
- I am accepted in Him.
- The Spirit is gradually transforming me.
Therefore, today’s obedience can arise from gratitude rather than fear, and from love rather than self-proving.
結語
Conclusion
Galatians 3:23–25 does not tell us to despise God’s Law; it teaches us to understand its role correctly:
The Law can supervise, expose, and prepare, but it cannot replace Christ; it can show us our need for a Savior, but it cannot itself be the Savior.
Now that we live in the age in which Christ has come, let us not return to slavery under rule-based justification, nor turn freedom into license. Let us grow in grace, walk by the Spirit, and live out God’s will in love.
