From Then to Now由從前到現在

Scripture: 1 Peter 2:10

“Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

This verse describes God’s transforming work in salvation through two powerful contrasts: once not a people, now the people of God; once without mercy, now recipients of mercy.

This new identity is not earned through human achievement; it comes from God’s initiative in showing mercy, establishing relationship, and bringing outsiders into His household.

From “Not a People” to “God’s People”

Peter uses language from Hosea 1:9–10 and 2:23. Hosea originally uses “Lo-Ammi” (“not my people”) and “Lo-Ruhamah” (“not shown mercy”) to describe Israel’s identity crisis under covenant judgment; yet God promises to reverse the judgment, changing “not my people” into “my people.”[1][2]

Peter applies this promise to believers in Christ, especially showing that Gentiles once outside the covenant community are now brought into God’s people through the gospel.[3][4]

Therefore, the church is not formed by people with the same background, culture, or interests, but by God’s mercy gathering different people into a new community.

This identity means we are no longer merely “individuals saved alone,” but brothers and sisters in God’s household—connected, bearing one another’s burdens, worshiping together, and witnessing together.

From “Without Mercy” to “Receiving Mercy”

“Without mercy” does not mean God previously lacked compassion; it means that the person had not yet entered the relationship, forgiveness, and belonging that God’s mercy brings.

Now “receiving mercy” means that God not only sees human sin and brokenness, but actively deals with sin through Christ’s cross and brings people back into His presence.

Mercy is not God pretending sin never happened; it is God bearing sin’s cost in Christ, forgiving sinners, and giving them a new identity and life.

This radically changes Christian self-understanding: I do not belong to God because I am worthy; I belong to God because He has shown mercy to me.

Remember Your Former “Not”

Today’s devotion invites us to remember who we once were.

This is not an invitation to remain trapped in shame or endlessly revisit the past to condemn oneself.

The purpose of remembering the past is to deepen our gratitude for God’s mercy.

You can ask:

  • In what ways did I once live as someone who did not belong to God?
  • What darkness, desires, idols, fears, or false values once ruled me?
  • Through whom, what event, which passage, or what community did God bring the gospel to me?
  • Where am I now experiencing God’s forgiveness, acceptance, healing, and renewal?

A genuine testimony does not have to be dramatic; it can be: “I was once deeply lonely, but God brought me into His household,” “I was once controlled by sin, but Christ began teaching me freedom,” or “I once had no hope, but God gave me direction in Christ.”

Grieve for Those Still Outside

When we know that we have received mercy, we should not turn that mercy into a wall of pride.

God’s mercy should move us to grieve, care, and pray for those who do not yet know the Lord, not to look at them with superiority or indifference.

However, grieving for unbelievers does not mean treating them as inferior, impure, or enemies.

They too are made in God’s image, in need of mercy, and able to hear the gospel.

Christians do not stand as “the merciful” giving charity to “the unworthy”; we are people who once equally needed mercy, now made God’s people by grace, and therefore called to share the mercy we have received.

What Can You Do for Them?

1. Pray for Them by Name

Choose one to three friends or family members and pray specifically: ask God to protect them, give them peace, open their hearts, and bring them into contact with the gospel and genuine Christian witness at the right time.

2. Accompany Them Through Genuine Relationship

Do not treat them merely as “evangelism targets”; genuinely care about their life, pressure, family, work, grief, and hopes.

3. Witness Through Your Life

Honesty at work, reliability in relationships, refusing revenge when hurt, and maintaining hope in difficulty can all show how God’s mercy changes people.

4. Share Your Story at the Right Time

Do not force acceptance or try to win an argument. Simply explain who you were, how God intervened, and how Christ is changing you now.

5. Offer Opportunities to Encounter the Gospel Community

Invite them to a meal, church activity, Bible study, evangelistic meeting, or natural friendship gathering, while respecting their boundaries and willingness.

From Receiving Mercy to Showing Mercy

First Peter 2:10 does not merely describe past and present; it prepares for a mission: because we have become God’s people, we are to live out God’s mercy in the world.

We can summarize it in one sentence:

We did not become God’s people because we deserved mercy; because we received mercy, we learn to bring mercy to others.

Reflection and Prayer

Do I truly thank God that I have moved from “not a people” to being “God’s people”?

Do I still define myself by past shame, failure, or rejection, forgetting that God has given me a new identity through mercy?

Which friends or family members around me do not yet know the Lord? Do I grieve for them and care for them with love rather than superiority?

For whom can I pray, listen, serve, or share my testimony this week?

Father, thank You that once I was not a people, but now I am part of Your people.

Thank You that once I had not received mercy, but now in Christ I have received mercy, forgiveness, acceptance, and new life.

Keep me from keeping Your mercy to myself or looking down on friends and family who remain in darkness.

Place one person’s name on my heart, so that I may faithfully love them through prayer, patience, care, a life of witness, and the clear gospel.

Since I have received mercy, may I become an instrument of mercy, giving more people the opportunity to know the Lord who brings those who were “not a people” into His household.
