Scripture: 1 Kings 22:41–50
“Jehoshaphat walked in the way of his father Asa, unceasingly, doing what was right in the LORD’s sight.”
Immediately after Ahab’s death and epitaph, the writer records a summary of Jehoshaphat’s life.
This arrangement is not accidental.
Kings deliberately places these two rulers side by side, allowing readers to see, at the close of the same chapter, two starkly different life directions and God’s differing evaluation of each.
A Relatively Positive Record
Jehoshaphat becomes king at thirty-five and reigns in Judah for twenty-five years.
The writer describes him as walking “in the way of his father Asa, unceasingly, doing what was right in the LORD’s sight.”
This stands in sharp contrast to Ahab’s evaluation: Ahab “did evil in the sight of the LORD” and even “sold himself” to do evil, while Jehoshaphat continually walks on a path pleasing to God.[1]
He removes the remaining male cult prostitutes from his father Asa’s days—a concrete religious reform showing that he does not merely passively avoid evil, but actively purifies the nation’s worship life.
He also lives at peace with the king of Israel, a notable achievement given the long-standing hostility between the northern and southern kingdoms.
These records show us that Jehoshaphat’s life indeed contains much worth emulating: sustained faithfulness, proactive reform, and a pursuit of peace.
“Yet the High Places Were Not Removed”
Yet the text immediately adds an honest qualification: “Nevertheless, the high places did not disappear, and the people still sacrificed on the high places and burned incense there.”
This reminds us that Scripture’s evaluation of Jehoshaphat is not unconditional perfection, but relative faithfulness.
The high places may originally have included some legitimate places of worship, but over time they increasingly mixed in Baal worship and Asherah poles, causing the people’s worship to lose its purity and even laying groundwork for more serious decline later.[2]
Jehoshaphat has ability, authority, and a heart for reform, yet does not thoroughly address this issue.
This reminds us that a generally faithful person may still leave certain corners unresolved.
Faithfulness does not mean flawless perfection; it means continually moving toward God’s will while honestly acknowledging areas not yet completed.
A Shipwreck That Brings Discernment
Verses 48–49 record an easily overlooked but highly significant event: Jehoshaphat builds ships of Tarshish to sail to Ophir for gold, but the ships are wrecked at Ezion-geber and never set sail.
Second Chronicles supplies the background: this shipwreck is connected to Jehoshaphat’s earlier alliance with Ahab’s house; the prophet Eliezer had predicted that because Jehoshaphat joined himself with the wicked Ahaziah, the ships would be destroyed.[3]
When Ahab’s son Ahaziah proposes, “Let my servants go with your servants in the ships,” Jehoshaphat this time refuses.
This refusal is worth noting.
The younger Jehoshaphat once told Ahab, “I am as you are; my people as your people.”
Now, facing Ahab’s son, he has learned to say “no.”
This shows that Jehoshaphat’s life is not static; through failure, cost, and God’s correction, he gradually learns to discern what kind of alliance would again put him in danger.[3][4]
True growth is often not the absence of every mistake, but a willingness, after failure, to be corrected by God and to make a different choice the next time a similar temptation arises.
Two Historical Mirrors
The lives of Ahab and Jehoshaphat, placed together at the close of the same chapter, form two mirrors.
Ahab follows idols, abuses power, seizes an innocent man’s inheritance, rejects the true prophet, and attempts to escape God’s word through disguise; he ultimately bleeds in his chariot, is licked by dogs, and leaves an ivory palace as a hollow legacy.
Jehoshaphat largely does what is right in God’s sight, actively reforms worship life, pursues peace with neighboring nations, and learns through failure to discern dangerous alliances; though imperfect, his life continually moves in the right direction, and he is ultimately buried peacefully with his ancestors.
These two portraits are not meant to reduce people to labels of “entirely good” or “entirely bad,” but to help us see that the direction of a life, one’s pattern of choices, and one’s response to God’s word are the decisive factors in the final evaluation.
Which Kind of Life Do You Want to Live?
This passage ultimately places the choice back in the reader’s hands.
Neither Ahab nor Jehoshaphat was destined by nature to walk a particular path; both gradually shaped their lives through countless concrete choices.
We too are not entirely determined by our past or circumstances; each day we shape the direction of our lives through concrete choices.
Are you willing to consistently choose integrity in small things, even when no one praises you?
Are you willing to accept God’s correction after failure, rather than repeatedly rationalizing your mistakes?
Are you willing to proactively address the “high places not yet removed” in your own life—the areas you know are not fully aligned with God’s will, yet have delayed addressing out of habit, convenience, or relational ease?
Are you willing, like the later Jehoshaphat, to learn to say a clear “no” in relationships and partnerships, even when the other party was once a close ally?
Reflection and Prayer
If God wrote a summary of my life today, would He first mention my consistent faithfulness, or the issues I keep avoiding?
Is there anything in my life, like the “high places,” that I know is not fully aligned with God’s will, yet have never dealt with because of habit or convenience?
Have I ever paid a price in a relationship or partnership, and then learned to discern and refuse being drawn into a similar alliance again?
Do I want to live an Ahab-like life centered on self, or a Jehoshaphat-like life continually moving toward God’s will?
Lord, help me live a life that consistently walks in the way that is right in Your sight, without turning aside.
Give me honesty to face the “high places” I have not yet dealt with, without delaying repentance because of habit, convenience, or pride.
Help me truly learn discernment after failure and cost, and give me courage to say a firm “no” when a similar temptation arises again.
May the summary of my life be not grand yet hollow achievements, but a testimony of consistently moving toward Your will and remaining faithful to the end.
