A Pop-Group Guide to Philosophy: From the Greek Three Sages to French Postmodernism

If philosophy is treated as a relay race of ideas, its main line runs from ancient Greek questions about truth and the good life, through modern attempts to ground knowledge and reason, to German Idealism’s focus on subjectivity, freedom, and history, followed by challenges to reason, the self, language, and power.

The following “philosophy idol groups” are a beginner-friendly learning map, not strict academic classifications.

This is not a story in which later thinkers simply become smarter; rather, the focus of questioning shifts from cosmos and virtue to knowledge and subjectivity, then to history, language, bodies, institutions, and power.

2. The Ancient Main Stage

The Greek Three Sages: Three Generations of Teacher and Student

Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle are the best place to begin: the first exposed false confidence through questioning, the second built grand theories of truth, soul, and the ideal city, and the third systematized logic, ethics, politics, nature, and knowledge.

MemberIdol roleOne-line understandingBeginner question
SocratesStreet-questioning challengerA life without examination is not worth living.“Why do I believe this?”
PlatoArchitect of the ideal republicThe visible world changes; truth requires rational inquiry.“What are justice, goodness, and reality?”
AristotleEncyclopedic system builderA good life depends on virtue, practice, and proportion—not slogans alone.“How do I build a stable and good character?”

Socrates held such a central place in antiquity that, apart from the Epicureans, nearly every ancient philosophical school regarded him either as a founder-like figure or as a model to emulate.

Hellenistic “Therapists of Life”

After Alexander’s empire, the world became larger and less stable, so philosophy turned more directly toward personal anxiety, fear, desire, and death.

3. From Modern Philosophy to the German Four

The Modern Face-Off: Rationalism and Empiricism

The central anxiety of modern philosophy was this: after the rise of science, could human beings find a genuinely reliable foundation for knowledge?

GroupMembersMain claimHow to use it
Continental rationalistsDescartes, Spinoza, LeibnizReason, logic, and necessity can yield reliable knowledge. When facing confusion, unpack assumptions, define terms, and build a system.
British empiricistsLocke, Berkeley, HumeKnowledge must remain connected to experience, perception, and observation.Do not rely on abstract reasoning alone; ask for data, observation, and counterexamples.

Descartes’ “I think” offers a model of seeking certainty through doubt, while Hume reminds us that many apparently necessary causal judgments are tied to habit and expectations formed by experience.

Kant, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel are indeed the classic “four giants of German Idealism.” Yet they were not four perfectly aligned teammates; they competed, revised one another, and intensified the problems opened by Kant.

MemberCore roleOne-line understandingWhom they respond to
KantThe boundary-setterWe can know the world of experience, but cannot extend reason without limit to things in themselves. The conflict between rationalism and empiricism.
FichteThe theorist of active selfhoodThe subject does not merely receive the world; it actively establishes the order of experience.Kant’s account of subjectivity, pushed more radically.
SchellingReconciler of nature and spiritNature is not dead matter; nature and mind share a deeper unity.Fichte’s apparent overemphasis on the “I.”
HegelMaster of historical dialecticTruth is not a static answer but unfolds through contradiction, conflict, and historical development. An attempt to integrate Kant, Fichte, and Schelling into a complete system.

German Idealism commonly refers to a movement from the 1780s to the 1840s, most famously represented by Kant, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel; despite major differences, they shared an effort to address the relationship among subjectivity, freedom, knowledge, and reality.

Hegel was among the movement’s most systematic thinkers, attempting to construct a comprehensive philosophy from a logical starting point; Marx later took up and transformed Hegel’s account of history into a materialist theory.

4. From Revolt Against Reason to the Linguistic Turn

The Nineteenth-Century Anti-Mainstream Trio

Hegelian grand systems were impressive, but they provoked a reaction: human beings are not made of reason alone; they also have desire, suffering, loneliness, faith, bodies, and non-rational impulses.

PhilosopherWhat they opposedReminder for modern readers
SchopenhauerOverly optimistic views of reason and historical progressDesire does not naturally end; learn to coexist with dissatisfaction, suffering, and finitude.
KierkegaardAbstract systems that swallow individual lifeReal choice, anxiety, and faith must be personally owned.
NietzscheThe absolute authority of inherited morality and fixed valuesDo not merely inherit values; test and create your own.

These three were not one school: Schopenhauer is closer to pessimism and philosophy of will, Kierkegaard is a major precursor of existentialism, and Nietzsche radically revalued morality, religion, and truth.

The Analytic Trio: Bringing Philosophy into the Language Lab

In the early twentieth century, another line stopped beginning with “What is the ultimate nature of reality?” and asked instead: “What exactly do our sentences make clear?”

MemberRepresentative contributionPractical meaning for ordinary readers
FregeModern logic; distinction between sense and referenceThe same object can be described differently; matching or differing names do not guarantee matching meanings.
RussellLogical analysis; theory of descriptionsBreak vague sentences into logical structures that can be checked.
WittgensteinEarly picture theory; later language gamesA word’s meaning often depends on how it is used in specific life and work contexts.

Frege and Russell established the logical-analytic orientation of analytic philosophy, while Wittgenstein used modern logic to rethink the relation among world, thought, language, and philosophical problems.

5. French Postmodernism: Unpacking Power, Text, and Grand Narratives

“French postmodernism” is a convenient but imperfect umbrella term. It commonly includes post-structuralism, deconstruction, genealogy, and philosophies of difference; not all of these thinkers accepted the identity of “postmodernist.”

MemberIdol roleKeywordsMost useful question
FoucaultDetective of powerKnowledge, discipline, surveillance, normalization, subject formation“Who gets to define normal, professional, healthy, and true?”
DerridaDeconstructor of textsDeconstruction, difference, différance, binary oppositions“What must this concept exclude in order to appear stable?”
DeleuzeThinker of becoming and connectionDifference, becoming, multiplicity, rhizome“Do not ask only for essence; ask how things change, connect, and flow.”
LyotardSkeptic of grand narrativesPostmodernity, knowledge, metanarratives“Who says history must progress, or that there is only one universal standard?”

Postmodernism can be understood as a set of critical and strategic practices that use concepts such as difference, repetition, trace, and simulacrum to destabilize apparently fixed truths and orders.

Lyotard is most commonly associated with postmodernism through The Postmodern Condition, while Deleuze is a key figure in French postmodern philosophy whose work centers on multiplicity, construction, difference, and becoming.[7][8]

A simplified but useful route is this: Hegel used dialectic to understand history and spirit; Marx recast history through material and class relations; Nietzsche challenged inherited values; Husserl returned to how experience appears; Heidegger asked about being and everyday existence; finally, Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze, and Lyotard shifted attention to power, discourse, texts, difference, and suspicion toward grand narratives.

This is not a straight line of teacher-student inheritance, but a network full of borrowing, opposition, revision, and productive misreading.

A Beginner Reading Order

If you want to follow the full main line, do not begin directly with Critique of Pure Reason, Phenomenology of Spirit, or Of Grammatology; they are important, but usually too dense for beginners.

Use this order instead: short before long, questions before systems, and introductions before primary texts.

  2. Begin with short Socratic and Platonic dialogues, such as Apology or Crito.
  4. Then read Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, or Epicurus to see how philosophy addresses anxiety, control, and desire.
  6. Next use shorter works or introductions to Descartes and Hume to understand the basic tension between reason and experience.
  8. After a guide to Kant, read “What Is Enlightenment?” and selections from Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals; grasp the problems before entering the three Critiques.
  10. Use an introduction to Hegel or selections from Lectures on the Philosophy of History to understand dialectic, but do not treat “thesis–antithesis–synthesis” as a universal Hegelian formula.
  12. Enter reflections on morality, truth, and value through Twilight of the Idols or selections from On the Genealogy of Morality.
  14. Read selections from Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations and apply them to everyday communication, requirement definitions, and conceptual clarification.
  16. Finally, approach Foucault’s Discipline and Punish, a guide to Lyotard’s The Postmodern Condition, and secondary introductions to Derrida and Deleuze before returning to their primary texts.

The best way to read is not to rush to memorize terminology. For each philosopher, write down three things: whom they oppose, what problem they are trying to solve, and whether their view can explain a real situation you know well.
