September 24 Devotional: Who Submits to Whom9月24日靈修:誰順服誰

First Peter 3:18–22 is one of the most difficult passages in the letter, but its central message is clear: Christ suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, and through His death and resurrection brought us to God; He is now exalted in heaven, with all powers subject to Him.

The passage begins and ends with a powerful contrast:

  • Beginning: Christ was put to death in the flesh.
  • Middle: He was made alive in the Spirit, proclaiming God’s victory.
  • End: He is at God’s right hand, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to Him.

Thus, the passage is not primarily intended to satisfy every curiosity about the “spirits in prison.” It encourages suffering believers: although Christ was condemned and killed by human beings, God raised, exalted, and established Him over every power.

Verse 18 presents the heart of the gospel:

“Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God.”

一次

Once

Christ’s death is a once-for-all, sufficient act of redemption that does not need repeated sacrifice. “Once” emphasizes the uniqueness and completeness of the cross.

The Righteous for the Unrighteous

Jesus did not die for His own sins but bore the consequences of sin on behalf of sinners. He is the righteous One; we are the unrighteous who need mercy and forgiveness.

Bringing Us to God

The goal of salvation is not merely the cancellation of sin, but restored relationship with God. Christ does not only rescue us from punishment; He brings us back into God’s presence.

The contrast between being put to death in the flesh and made alive in the Spirit is not a claim that the physical body is evil and the spirit is good.

“Flesh” refers to Christ’s real human and bodily life on earth; “Spirit” refers to His resurrection life in God’s power. Peter’s point is that the cross was not the end of Christ’s defeat; the resurrection revealed His victory over death.

This matters for believers because God’s work may sometimes appear to fail in human eyes, but the resurrection shows that God’s final verdict is not determined by human opinion.

Verses 19–20 are the most debated part of the passage. Christian interpretation has offered several major views, so we should not pretend that only one answer exists without controversy.

View 1: Imprisoned Evil Spirits or Fallen Angels

Some interpreters understand “spirits” as non-human spiritual beings; these spirits were associated with evil in Noah’s time and are now imprisoned, while Christ proclaimed His victory over them through the cross and resurrection.

On this view, “proclaiming” does not necessarily mean inviting them to repentance, but announcing victory and judgment.

View 2: The Unbelievers Who Died in Noah’s Generation

Another historic interpretation understands the “spirits” as the unbelievers who died in Noah’s generation, to whom Christ proclaimed judgment or victory. This view has had significant historical influence, but interpreters still disagree about the content and purpose of the proclamation.

View 3: Christ Preached Through Noah to People of That Time

Another interpretation is that Christ preached through Noah to the people living at that time; by the time Peter wrote, they had died and were therefore described as “spirits in prison.”

Whatever interpretation one adopts, this passage should not be used casually to establish a doctrine that everyone receives a second chance for salvation after death. Its focus is not to give a complete timetable of postmortem salvation, but to proclaim Christ’s victory over every opposing power.

Peter connects Noah’s deliverance through the flood with Christian baptism:

  • Most people were disobedient, but eight people entered the ark.
  • The ark became the place of deliverance amid judgment.
  • The water was both an instrument of judgment and the setting for God’s deliverance.
  • Baptism points to Christ’s death and resurrection and the believer’s new identity in union with Christ.

Verse 21 clarifies that baptism is not merely the washing of physical dirt, nor does the water possess magical power. It concerns a faith-response to God and the appeal for a clear conscience.

The meaning of baptism includes:

  • I acknowledge my need for Christ’s salvation.
  • I believe Christ died and rose again.
  • I am willing to leave the old life and belong to Christ.
  • I desire to live before God with a clear conscience.

Baptism does not manipulate God through an external ritual; it visibly expresses trust, belonging, and obedience.

The title asks, “Who submits to whom?” Verse 22 gives the ultimate answer: all angels, authorities, and powers are subject to Jesus, who has ascended into heaven and sits at God’s right hand.

This does not mean every earthly authority already acts fully according to God’s will; it means no earthly or spiritual power is higher than Christ.

因此:

Therefore:

  • Believers may respect government but must not treat it as God.
  • They may respect supervisors but must not sin to keep a job.
  • They may listen to community opinion but must not let the crowd replace Christ as Lord.
  • They may endure human judgment while knowing that God’s judgment is final.

The ultimate direction of submission is not downward surrender to every power; it is first submitting to Christ and then discerning, in Christ, how to relate to earthly authorities.

Noah’s family lived in a generation where most people were disobedient. Noah’s obedience did not arise from social support but from trusting God’s word and building the ark even before the flood was visible.

The challenge for believers today is:

  • Do I hold to faith only when others approve?
  • Do I abandon conscience because I fear being seen as different?
  • Am I willing to act on God’s word before the outcome is visible?
  • Do I treat “everyone does it” as the moral standard?

Noah did not witness through isolation, pride, or attacking society; his witness was rooted in trust, obedience, and long-term faithfulness.

In Faith

Confess daily again: “Jesus Christ is Lord.” This means fear, desire, work, family, and the future do not possess ultimate sovereignty over me.

In Conscience

Before important choices, ask:

  • Is this consistent with Christ’s truth?
  • Would this require concealment, deception, or harm?
  • Can I pray to God with a clear conscience?

Under Pressure

Do not treat short-term loss as final failure. Christ’s cross shows that faithfulness may pass through deathlike darkness, but resurrection is God’s final answer.

In Baptismal Identity

If you have been baptized, reflect today: Am I living as someone who belongs to Christ and seeks a clear conscience before God?

If you have not been baptized, seek a pastor or mature believer to understand baptism’s meaning and its relationship to faith, belonging, and following Christ.

Christ’s resurrection is not merely meant to produce an emotional “feeling”; it is an objective gospel reality and a present source of hope.

Even when we feel weak, silent, or confused, Christ remains the risen Lord; His work is not determined by our emotions.

You can pray:

Lord Jesus, You died for my sins and have risen. Help me today not merely to believe this intellectually, but to acknowledge You as Lord through my choices, attitudes, and actions.

Obedience does not mean considering oneself superior or escaping all unbelievers; it means remaining faithful, good, honest, and compassionate in an unbelieving society.

Choose one thing today that you know is right but may cost you something, and ask God for strength to do it.

結語

Conclusion

First Peter 3:18–22 is not ultimately meant to trap us in the complexity of the “spirits in prison” question, but to return us to several firm truths:

  • Christ suffered once for sins and accomplished redemption.
  • The righteous One brought the unrighteous to God.
  • Christ has risen, so death is not the final word.
  • Baptism expresses belonging to Christ and a clear conscience before God.
  • All spiritual and earthly powers are subject to Christ.

The real question today is not “Must I submit to everyone?” but “Am I first submitting in my heart to the risen, ascended Christ who rules over all?”
