September 23 Devotional: Giving an Answer with Gentleness9月23日靈修:溫柔地給他們一個答案

First Peter 3:13–17 does not require Christians to win every debate. It calls us first to honor Christ as Lord in our hearts and then to answer questions about faith clearly, gently, reverently, and with a clear conscience. Its model of witness is this: prepare the life as well as the answer; both content and manner matter.

The order in verse 15 is essential: first “honor Christ the Lord as holy,” and only then “be prepared to give an answer.”

This means Christian witness is first a matter of lordship, not technique. Are you truly allowing Christ to be:

  • The foundation of your security?
  • The source of your worth?
  • Your hope in suffering?
  • Your highest standard in decision-making?

If we speak about Christ while being ruled by applause, money, success, or fear, our answer may be correct yet lack the credibility of a transformed life.

Honoring Christ as Lord does not mean we never feel fear; it means fear no longer has the final authority.

If an unbelieving friend asks, “Why do you believe in Jesus?” you might respond as follows:

I believe in Jesus not because Christians have no problems, nor because faith makes me superior to others. I believe in Jesus because I recognize that I am not completely righteous and cannot solve the deepest problems of life by myself. I have selfishness, pride, fear, and ways of hurting others within me; sin separates me from God and from other people.

The good news of Christianity is that God has not abandoned us because of our sin. Jesus Christ came into the world, lived without sin, bore our sins on the cross, and rose from the dead, showing that sin, death, and despair are not the final word. He invites us to repent, trust Him, receive forgiveness, and be reconciled to God.

I still make mistakes and still experience fear, but I no longer need to prove my worth through achievement or protect myself through revenge and control. My hope is not based on circumstances always going well, but on Christ’s love, His death and resurrection for me, and His continuing presence with me.

This response includes the core of the gospel: who God is, humanity’s problem, what Christ accomplished, and how people should respond. The gospel centers on Christ’s death and resurrection for sinners and calls people to repentance, faith, and new life.

The “answer” in verse 15 is related to apologetics and can refer to giving a reasoned explanation of faith; yet Peter specifically requires that it be offered with gentleness and respect.

When answering a friend, remember:

Listen to the question before reciting an answer.
Clarify the real question. “Why does God allow suffering?” may actually be a disclosure of personal pain.
Do not pretend to know everything. You can honestly say, “I do not have a complete answer, but I am willing to explore it with you.”
Do not treat the person as an opponent to defeat. The person is first someone deserving respect.
Let life support words. If we speak of forgiveness while continually repaying evil with evil, the witness loses credibility.

Gentleness does not weaken truth, and reverence does not mean being afraid to speak; they mean telling the truth in a manner consistent with Christ’s character.

1. Prepare the Gospel Content

At minimum, know how to explain four things clearly:

God’s creation and love: people are made in God’s image and possess dignity and purpose.
Human sin and brokenness: we do not merely make occasional mistakes; we often replace God with self.
Christ’s cross and resurrection: Jesus died and rose for sinners, bringing forgiveness and reconciliation.
Human response: repent, trust Christ, receive Him as Lord, and begin new life.

2. Prepare Your Story

In addition to explaining Christian beliefs, you can share:

  • How you viewed yourself and the world before faith.
  • What led you to seriously consider Jesus.
  • How Christ changed your direction, hope, or relationships.
  • What struggles you still have.

A genuine testimony does not require presenting yourself as perfect. You can honestly say, “I am still growing, but I am no longer alone and no longer trying to save myself.”

3. Prepare to Listen

Jesus’ conversations often began by engaging people’s real needs and inner questions.

When answering “Why do you believe in Jesus?” you may also ask:

  • “What most confuses you about Jesus?”
  • “Have you had any previous contact with Christianity?”
  • “Are you asking because of an intellectual question, or because of something you recently experienced?”

Such questions do not avoid answering; they help you respond to the question the person is actually asking.

“If God exists, why is there suffering?”

You might say:

This is a deep and painful question, and I do not want to dismiss it with a simple answer. Christianity recognizes the reality of evil and suffering and believes that God does not stand at a distance indifferently. Jesus entered the suffering world, bore pain and sin on the cross, and through His resurrection declared that death is not the final word. I still do not understand everything, but I believe God is present in suffering and will ultimately bring justice and renewal.

“Why are Christians often not very good people?”

That criticism is sometimes justified; Christians are not perfect people. Christianity does not claim that believers are sinless, but that we acknowledge sin, need grace, and are continually being transformed in Christ. Christian failure does not prove Jesus false, but it does remind the church to repent and make its life more consistent with the gospel it proclaims.

“Is believing in Jesus merely psychological comfort?”

Faith does bring comfort, but Christianity is not merely about feeling comfortable. It also requires me to face my sin, surrender self-centeredness, forgive others, and follow Christ. For me, faith is not an escape from reality but a source of strength to face reality more honestly in Christ.

1. Do I Truly Honor Christ as Lord?

Examine:

  • Are my decisions mainly shaped by God’s truth or by fear and human opinion?
  • Do I remain faithful when faith becomes costly?
  • Do I speak about Jesus only in safe church settings while completely hiding my faith at work and socially?
  • Does my life make the hope I speak about visible?

2. Am I Ready to Answer?

Write down three sentences today:

  2. What is the core reason I believe in Jesus?
  4. How has Christ brought hope into my life?
  6. How can I share this clearly and gently in one minute?

例如:

For example:

I believe in Jesus because I believe He is the Savior sent by God, who died for human sin and rose again. He has shown me that my worth does not depend on achievement or other people’s approval, and He gives me forgiveness and hope amid failure and suffering. I am not perfect, but I am learning to follow Him. If you are willing, I would also like to hear what you think about Jesus.

結語

Conclusion

First Peter 3:13–17 reminds us that Christian witness does not come through pressuring people to accept the faith, but through:

  • Honoring Christ as Lord in the heart.
  • Being zealous for good in life.
  • Refusing to be ruled by fear and retaliation in suffering.
  • Answering clearly, gently, and reverently.

We are not trying to defeat people in argument; we are called to explain our hope faithfully and let our lives demonstrate the hope we proclaim.

Lord, help us first to honor You as Lord in our hearts and then to witness to You in word and deed—giving us truth without pride, courage without harshness, and hope without escaping reality.
