A man and a woman walk the entire timeline.
The seven covenants are not seven roles, but covenantal meanings progressively unfolded within one history.
No one is cast as Adam, Noah, Moses, or David; both stand before God as themselves—created, fallen, and in need of grace.
Study Note
This guide uses seven covenantal themes as a learning framework for tracing the biblical story of redemption. Christian traditions may differ in the number, names, and classification of covenants; this framework does not replace direct study of the biblical texts.
The covenants are first God’s acts in real history; a man-woman relationship is only a learning lens that helps us view the larger story of redemption through familiar human experience.
Every layer ultimately points to Christ: he fulfils God’s promises, leads his people, grants forgiveness and new hearts, and enables people to walk truly with God.

Study Each Layer: Text, Analogy, and Practice
Eden / Adam: Encounter Is a Gift—and a Responsibility
Read: Genesis 1:26–28; 2:18–25; 3:1–13
Biblical Focus
God created male and female in his image and gave them a shared vocation to steward creation. “One flesh” displays created goodness—intimacy, covenant faithfulness, and freedom from shame.
Yet Genesis 3 immediately shows sin’s effects: fear, hiding, blame-shifting, and relational fracture.
Relational Lens
Encounter and attraction can be genuine gifts, but the other person is neither an idol meant to fill one’s emptiness nor a project to control.
Both are creatures learning honesty, boundaries, self-control, and responsibility.
Do Not Misread As
Do not say, “You are Adam, so you should…” or “You are Eve, so you made me fall.”
The text first exposes this: every person, faced with sin, runs from God, hides from truth, and shifts blame.
反思
Reflection
What fear, shame, or desire for control do I most easily bring into the “garden” of intimacy?
Noah: God Still Preserves Space in a Broken World
Read: Genesis 8:20–9:17
Biblical Focus
After the flood, God covenants with Noah and every living creature, giving the rainbow as a sign.
The focus is God’s preservation of created order—seasons, life, and human history; it is not a guarantee that every human plan will succeed.
Relational Lens
Amid misunderstanding, old wounds, and family pressures, the fact that people can still speak, cool down, seek counsel, and pray is already grace.
This layer calls people to value that space, but not to mistake it for a guaranteed outcome.
Do Not Misread As
Do not put yourself in the place of a “savior,” assuming that greater effort can rescue another person.
Neither should continued contact be treated as God’s guarantee that a relationship must succeed.
反思
Reflection
What “space to continue” is God presently giving me to treasure? How can I speak truth, keep boundaries, and wait patiently within it?
Abraham: Commitment Walks by Faith Toward Promise
Read: Genesis 12:1–3; 15:1–6; 17:1–8
Biblical Focus
God calls Abraham to leave familiar land and promises offspring, land, and blessing to all nations through him.
Abraham’s story is not a romantic adventure but faith: trusting God to fulfil his word where fulfilment cannot yet be seen.
Relational Lens
Serious courtship and discerning marriage raise a question: “Am I willing to make mature and godly choices for a shared future?”
This includes discerning calling, values, faith, responsibility, and a direction of blessing others—not merely following a passing feeling.
Do Not Misread As
Do not use “leave your country” to demand that another person leave family, work, or all support systems.
Neither should “faith” bypass clear communication, church counsel, financial preparation, or safety considerations.
反思
Reflection
If this relationship moves toward the future, how could it become a blessing to others rather than merely satisfying my own needs?
Sinai / Moses: Learning Shared Life After Grace
Read: Exodus 19:3–6; 20:1–17; Deuteronomy 6:4–9
Biblical Focus
Israel was not rescued from Egypt by keeping the law; God acted in salvation first and then gave the law at Sinai.
The law taught his covenant people how to live in holiness, justice, worship, and love of neighbor.
Relational Lens
As a relationship enters commitment and shared life, the two need a clear and jointly protected “household charter.”
This includes how to discuss money, share work, handle conflict, cultivate sexual faithfulness, relate to parents, practise rest, and participate in church.
These are not cold rules but an order that protects both people and gives love a concrete form.
Do Not Misread As
Do not turn the Mosaic layer into a power structure: it is not the husband legislating and the wife executing, nor one person policing while the other submits reports.
Both stand under God’s word, both need repentance, and both receive grace.
反思
Reflection
What one “household charter” do we most need to build together so that love becomes more concrete and more just in daily life?
David: The Home’s Throne Belongs to Christ Alone
Read: 2 Samuel 7:8–16; Luke 1:32–33
Biblical Focus
God promises David an enduring house and kingdom; the New Testament directs this hope to Jesus Christ.
The Davidic covenant is not about any human’s forceful leadership but God’s faithful establishment of his anointed King.
Relational Lens
A healthy home does not make either spouse’s emotions, income, abilities, opinions, or spiritual performance the supreme authority.
Husband and wife may have different gifts and responsibilities, but both listen, decide, and serve one another under Christ’s lordship.
Do Not Misread As
Do not use “David” to beautify control, silence, domination, or the idea that “whoever is more spiritual gets the final say.”
Christ’s kingship brings truth, self-giving love, protection of the vulnerable, and peace—not spiritualized domination.
反思
Reflection
In our decisions and conflicts, what kind of “false kingship” most often takes Christ’s place?
Land: Naming Loss, Hoping for God’s Regathering
Read: Deuteronomy 28:58–68; 30:1–10
Biblical Focus
Within Deuteronomy’s covenant framework, land is both a God-given inheritance and the concrete arena of covenant faithfulness.
Unfaithfulness brings expulsion and exile; yet God also promises mercy and regathering when his people turn back to seek him.
Relational Lens
Alienation, separation, blocking, or loss of intimacy in a relationship must not be minimized.
They resemble losing a “place of dwelling”: there are real harms and consequences.
Movement toward repair needs safety, honest confession, verifiable change, appropriate boundaries, and, when needed, accompaniment from pastors, counsellors, or qualified professionals.
Do Not Misread As
Do not use “forgiveness” to pressure an injured person into instant trust, nor use “return” to escape real consequences.
Forgiveness entrusts vengeance to God; reconciliation requires genuine repentance, verifiable change, and the free response of both people in safety.
Forgiveness, reconciliation, rebuilding trust, and resuming shared life may be related but are not identical processes.
Where there is violence, threat, coercion, or serious harm, safety and seeking help are necessary.
反思
Reflection
What harms do I need to confess honestly? Which boundaries of the other person do I need to respect? What outcome beyond my control do I need to entrust to God?
New Covenant: Not Gritting Teeth, but Walking as Renewed People
Read: Jeremiah 31:31–34; Ezekiel 36:24–28; Luke 22:20; Hebrews 8:6–13
Biblical Focus
The new covenant promises forgiveness, the law written on the heart, true knowledge of God, and, through the Spirit, new hearts and renewed obedience.
It does not abolish holiness; it makes obedience flow from a grace-renewed interior.
Relational Lens
Reading Scripture together, interceding for one another, offering honest apologies, learning forgiveness, and continuing in repentance are not religious “marriage checklists.”
These practices acknowledge that both people need Christ’s daily renewal.
Lasting companionship cannot rest on rules or willpower alone; it depends on the Spirit gradually writing truth, love, and repentance into the heart.
Do Not Misread As
Do not make “inner renewal” a spiritual slogan for evading concrete repair.
A new heart bears visible fruit: truthfulness, responsibility, repentance, patience, self-control, justice, and love.
反思
Reflection
What truth do I long for God to write more deeply on my heart, so that I may be less defensive and live more by grace in relationship?

From encounter to lasting companionship, these seven themes may unfold gradually within one history and often overlap.
People do not necessarily experience them in a fixed order; in different seasons, we may need to return again to creation’s design, common grace’s preservation, repentance’s return, and the new covenant’s renewal.
Closing Word
One Line, Seven Layers of Light
On this line there is a man, a woman, and the God who remains faithful throughout.
Covenant names mark layers of God’s saving work; they do not assign roles to people.
From encounter to a lifetime together, a relationship can be seen afresh in the light of creation, preservation, promise, charter, kingship, return, and a new heart.
Yet its true hope is never “two people finally getting the relationship right.”
It is Christ, who by grace enables people to know God, love one another truthfully, and walk faithfully in him.
There is one history, yet grace has seven layers.
The two are not reenacting the stories of biblical figures; in Christ, they are learning to live within the redemptive reality to which Scripture bears witness and toward which it points.
