The term “Mediator” (Greek: mesitēs) literally means “one who stands in the middle.” In the biblical context, a mediator is one who serves as a bridge between God and humanity, bringing God’s will to people and presenting people’s needs before God.
Throughout Scripture, a central dilemma persists: God is holy, and humanity is sinful—this chasm prevents people from approaching God directly. Therefore, God actively establishes mediators to serve as channels of communication, witnesses of the covenant, and means of restoring relationship between Himself and humanity.
The necessity of a mediator arises from three fundamental facts:
God’s holiness: God is utterly holy, righteous, and glorious; sinners cannot stand in His presence. -
Human sinfulness: All have sinned and fall short of God’s glory, becoming separated from God. -
God’s active grace: God desires relationship with humanity, so He actively establishes mediators to bridge this gap.
The Old Testament mediator system is part of God’s progressive revelation in salvation history. These mediators are all “types”—they point, in an imperfect way, to the coming perfect Mediator.
Moses is the most representative mediator in the Old Testament. In the establishment of the Sinaitic Covenant, Moses fulfilled three core functions:
Transmitter: He went up Mount Sinai, received the law, commandments, and ordinances from God, then came down and proclaimed them to the people. God’s word came to the whole assembly of Israel through him.
Intercessor: When the people sinned by worshiping the golden calf and God threatened to destroy them, Moses stood in the “breach” and earnestly interceded for the people, even offering to have his own name blotted out to secure their survival.
Witness of the covenant: Moses presided over the covenant ceremony, sprinkling half of the sacrificial blood on the altar (representing God) and half on the people (representing humanity), establishing the covenantal relationship through the bond of blood.
Moses himself described this mediatorial role: “At that time I stood between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD.” (Deuteronomy 5:5)
The priesthood was the core of Israel’s religious life. Priests stood between God and the people, bearing sacred mediatorial responsibilities:
Offerer of sacrifices: People could not enter the sanctuary to offer sacrifices themselves; they had to go through priests. Priests offered sacrifices morning and evening, maintaining the nation’s relationship with God on behalf of the people.
Teacher: Priests were responsible for teaching the law to the people, communicating God’s will to the congregation. Malachi 2:7 explicitly states: “For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.”
Intercessor: On the Day of Atonement, the high priest entered the Most Holy Place with blood to atone for the people. Numbers 16:47-48 records that when plague broke out due to the people’s sin, Aaron stood with his censer “between the dead and the living,” and the plague stopped—this is a precise image of a mediator standing between two parties.
The prophetic office was that of “God’s spokesman.” Unlike priests who handled sacrificial rituals, prophets stood before God to receive revelation and then proclaimed it to the people. The prophetic mediatorial function is seen in:
Receiving God’s word: Prophets said “Thus says the LORD,” indicating they first heard from God before speaking.
Proclaiming to the people: Prophets communicated God’s judgment, calls to repentance, and promises to the people, summoning them to return to God.
Interceding for the people: Prophets also prayed to God on behalf of the people, such as Samuel interceding for Israel and Jeremiah weeping and interceding for the people’s sins.
Kings in the Davidic Covenant had a “representative” mediatorial function. As God’s anointed one, King David represented the people in governance before God. The king’s mediatorial role is seen in:
Representing the people: The king’s obedience or disobedience directly affected the nation’s destiny. David’s census brought plague; his intercession stopped it, showing the king’s fate was bound with the people’s.
Building and maintaining the temple: The king was responsible for building the temple and maintaining worship order, enabling the people to properly approach God.
Executing justice: The king represented God on earth in executing judgment and justice, securing the people’s welfare within the covenant.
The book of Job presents a unique mediatorial theme. Job simultaneously plays two roles:
He longs for a mediator: In his suffering, Job cries out: “There is no umpire between us, who might lay his hand on us both.” (Job 9:33) He also says: “Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and he who testifies for me is on high.” (Job 16:19) This shows Job deeply understood that humanity needs one who can reach both God and man.
He serves as a mediator for his friends: At the end of the book, God instructs Job’s three friends to bring burnt offerings to Job, “and my servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly.” (Job 42:8) Job offered sacrifices and prayed for his friends, bringing them forgiveness—he actually fulfilled a mediatorial role.
Job’s case is unique in that he is both one who longs for a mediator and one whom God uses as a mediator for others. This duality makes Job a unique typological figure in the Old Testament, pointing to the ultimate Mediator who is both human and divine, able to hold both ends together.
The “Suffering Servant” in Isaiah 53 is a prophetic portrayal, different in nature from historical offices like Moses or the priesthood—it is not an independently operating mediatorial role in history, but God’s direct fore-announcement through the prophet of the coming New Covenant Mediator.
The core mediatorial language of this passage includes:
“Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.” (Isa 53:4)—He bore the punishment that the people deserved.
“The LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isa 53:6)—He became the bearer of iniquity.
“He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” (Isa 53:12)—He both bore sin and executed the mediatorial work of intercession.
This prophecy finds its complete fulfillment in Jesus Christ, serving as one of the most crucial bridges from the Old Testament to the New Testament.
The New Testament explicitly declares: Jesus Christ is the one and only perfect Mediator between God and humanity.
希伯來書三次明確使用「新約的中保」(mediator of the new covenant)——來8:6、9:15、12:24。
It is worth noting that the word “mediator” (mesitēs) in the New Testament is almost always closely tied to “covenant” (διαθήκη). Hebrews explicitly uses “mediator of the new covenant” three times—8:6, 9:15, 12:24. This means Christ’s mediatorial office is not merely “communicating between two parties,” but personally becoming the covenant mediator of the new covenant, establishing it with His own blood and ensuring its eternal effectiveness.
Although 1 Timothy 2:5 does not explicitly mention “covenant,” scholars note that its context still presupposes the concept of “mediator of the new covenant.” Thus, Christ as Mediator is not merely a channel of communication, but the covenant mediator—this forms a precise correspondence and superior contrast with Moses (the witness of the old covenant).
“For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5)
This is one of the most central mysteries of the Christian faith. The mediator must simultaneously hold both ends—one end is God, the other is humanity.
(A) Jesus must be fully human
He can represent humanity: As one man’s sin brought the fall of all humanity, salvation must also come through “one man” to represent all humanity and bear the consequence of sin.
He can experience human weakness: Jesus hungered, tired, suffered, and wept. He experienced temptation, so He can sympathize with human weakness rather than judging coldly from on high.
He can die for humanity: God is Spirit and cannot die. If the Mediator was to bear the penalty that “the wages of sin is death,” He must be a flesh-and-blood human capable of actual death.
(B) Jesus must be fully God
He can fully reveal God: Humanity cannot see God nor fully comprehend the extent of His holiness. Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” Only God Himself can fully reveal the nature of God.
His obedience has infinite value: The death of an ordinary person could atone for only one person’s sin, not millions. But Jesus is God; His life has infinite value, so His single sacrifice can become an “eternally effective sin offering.”
He can conquer death: Death can bind humanity but cannot bind God. Jesus’ resurrection proves He is Lord over life; if He were merely human, He could not overcome death, and salvation would be uncertain.
(C) Only the God-man can be the true bridge
A mediator is not merely a messenger “shouting” between two parties; the mediator must connect both ends by means of Himself. As God, Jesus’ words are God’s words; as man, His death is humanity’s death, and His resurrection is humanity’s resurrection, representing all who believe in Him. Precisely because Jesus possesses both divine and human natures, He could do something unique on the cross: as man, He offered perfect obedience; as God, He gave that obedience infinite value.
Hebrews 8:6 clearly states: “But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one.” The word “superior” (kreittōn) is the very theme that runs through Hebrews—Jesus surpasses all Old Testament institutions.
身份 / Identity 僅是人,有罪、有限 / Only human, sinful, finite 完全的神,完全的人,無罪、無限 / Fully God and fully man, sinless, infinite
資格的來源 / Source of Qualification 被神外在揀選與授權 / Externally chosen and authorized by God 本質上就是神,道成肉身 / Essentially God, incarnate

效果 / Effect 暫時維持約的關係 / Temporarily maintained covenant relationship 徹底打通神與人之間的路,使人與神永遠和好 / Permanently opened the way between God and man, securing eternal reconciliation
The “official” mediators of the Old Testament (priests, prophets, kings) have ceased in the New Testament because Jesus has completely fulfilled and replaced these offices. However, the New Testament gives the concept of “mediator” a new, spiritual dimension—all believers can and should participate in Christ’s mediatorial work.
The New Testament no longer establishes priests, prophets (as offices for giving new revelation), or kings (as representatives of theocratic government), because:
Priests: Jesus has offered Himself as the sacrifice; the veil is torn; believers can approach God directly, no longer needing a human priesthood.
Prophets: Jesus is God’s final and most complete revelation. Hebrews 1:1-2 says: “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.”
Kings: Jesus is the eternal King; His kingdom is not of this world. There is no longer an earthly throne representing theocratic government.
Although believers are not called “mediators” (because this title belongs exclusively to Christ), believers participate in the functional ministry of mediation:
(1) Intercessors
Paul says in 1 Timothy 2:1: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people.” The Greek word enteuxis for “intercession” means “to speak on behalf of others before God.” All believers can bring others’ needs before God through prayer.
(2) Ambassadors of reconciliation
Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:18-20: “God… gave us the ministry of reconciliation… We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” Believers are called to proclaim the gospel and summon sinners back to God—this is an extension of the mediatorial function in the ministry of proclamation.
(3) A royal priesthood
1 Peter 2:9 says: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood.” In the New Testament, all believers are priests. We no longer offer bulls and goats, but “offer our bodies as living sacrifices,” and intercede for and support one another.
祭司 / Priests 獻祭、教導律法、為百姓贖罪 / Offered sacrifices, taught law, atoned for people 利未記全書;瑪2:7
大祭司 / High Priest 一年一次進入至聖所,代表全民與神和好 / Entered Most Holy Place once a year, represented all Israel 利16章
先知 / Prophets 領受並傳達神的話,呼籲百姓回轉 / Received and proclaimed God’s word, called people to repent 耶1:9–10;結3:17
君王 / Kings 代表百姓治理,維護敬拜秩序,執行公義 / Represented people in governance, maintained worship, executed justice 撒下7;王上8:22–53
約伯(特殊案例)/ Job (special case) 為朋友獻祭代求(伯42:8);同時渴望一位中保(伯9:33,16:19) / Offered sacrifices and interceded for friends (Job 42:8); simultaneously longed for a mediator (Job 9:33, 16:19) 伯1:5;9:33;16:19;42:8
受苦的僕人(預言性描繪)/ Suffering Servant (prophetic depiction) 擔當百姓的罪孽,為罪犯代求——此為預言性指向,非獨立運作的歷史職位 / Bore the people’s sins, interceded for transgressors—this is a prophetic pointer, not an independently operating historical office 賽53:4–12
耶穌基督(唯一的中保)/ Jesus Christ (the one Mediator) 獻上自己為贖罪祭,永遠活著為信徒代求,徹底除罪,成就永遠的救恩,作更美之約的中保 / Offered Himself as the atoning sacrifice, lives forever to intercede, completely removes sin, accomplishes eternal salvation, serves as Mediator of a better covenant 提前2:5;來7:25;8:6;9:15;12:24
信徒(非稱為中保,但參與中保功能)/ Believers (not called mediators, but participate in mediatorial functions) 代禱、傳福音、彼此服事、作君尊的祭司 / Intercede, proclaim gospel, serve one another, function as a royal priesthood 提前2:1;林後5:18–20;彼前2:9
The Old Testament mediator system is like a finely drawn sketch, outlining the contours of God’s redemptive plan, but the picture itself is black-and-white and incomplete. Moses, priests, prophets, kings—each reflected some aspect of the mediator in their limited way, but each, because of their own sin and death, could not accomplish final redemption. Job’s cry—”there is no umpire between us”—is the silent longing of the Old Testament era for the true Mediator.
When Jesus Christ came, He was not one mediator among many, but the One to whom all mediators pointed. He is the true Moses—leading His people out of slavery to sin; He is the true High Priest—offering one sacrifice that is eternally effective; He is the true Prophet—fully revealing the Father; He is the true Davidic King—establishing an eternal kingdom.
Precisely because Jesus is simultaneously fully God (giving His obedience and sacrifice infinite value) and fully man (enabling Him to truly represent us, die for us, and rise again), He can be the one and only perfect Mediator. In the New Testament, the word “mediator” is almost always tied to “covenant”—He is not merely a channel of communication, but the covenant mediator of the new covenant, establishing it with His blood and ensuring its eternal effectiveness by His perpetual life.
The work of all Old Testament mediators finds its ultimate fulfillment in Him; the participation of all New Testament believers also derives from His unique mediatorial office.
Since the New Testament no longer requires a human priesthood, and all believers are called “a royal priesthood,” what does this mean for our daily faith life?
Boldness to approach God directly: We no longer need any human mediator to come before God. Hebrews 4:16 says: “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence.” This means our devotions, prayers, and confessions can be made directly to God.
The responsibility of mutual intercession: Although there are no longer “official” priests, the function of “intercession” has been given to every believer. James 5:16 says: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Each of us has the responsibility to stand in the gap for others.
The mission of evangelism: We are “Christ’s ambassadors,” sent to call people to be reconciled to God. This is not the exclusive domain of a few full-time ministers, but the daily duty of every believer—in the workplace, in the family, in the community, we all represent Christ in extending the invitation of reconciliation.
Living sacrifice: 1 Peter 2:5 says we are “to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” These “spiritual sacrifices” include our daily obedience, love, mercy, and acts of justice. We no longer offer bulls and goats, but offer our bodies and lives as sacrifices to God.
“He is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.”
“For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”
