第一,不把佛洛伊德、阿德勒、榮格的理論當作已被完全證實的科學事實,而是視為理解內在經驗的不同「詮釋框架」;
第二,將阿德勒的「課題分離」表達為實用的界線工具,而非阿德勒原著中最核心的正式術語;
First, do not treat Freud’s, Adler’s, and Jung’s theories as fully proven scientific facts, but as different interpretive frameworks for inner experience;
second, present Adlerian “separation of tasks” as a useful boundary tool rather than Adler’s central formal doctrine;
third, ground “acceptance” in the gospel—not self-justification, but honest acknowledgment of sin, wounds, limitations, and the need for renewal in God’s grace.
Freud’s id, ego, and superego are classic models for understanding impulse, reality regulation, and internalized norms, but they should not be treated as directly observable psychological organs.
Adler especially emphasizes choice, goal-directed living, connection, and contribution; his “community feeling” points toward belonging, cooperation, and the common good.
Jung’s shadow, persona, and individuation provide powerful language for understanding repressed parts, social roles, and personality integration; yet from a Christian perspective, ultimate wholeness is not merely “finding the true self,” but being renewed, forgiven, and conformed to Christ.
Introduction: Not Rebuilding Ourselves, but Being Renewed in Truth
Everyone lives with an invisible psychological system.
This system includes temperament, childhood experiences, family dynamics, past wounds, unmet needs, learned defenses, and the beliefs and life narratives gradually formed over time.
If life is compared to driving a vehicle, these early-formed patterns are like a person’s “factory settings.”
They affect how I face conflict, intimacy, failure, authority, money, work, rejection, and uncertainty.
Yet factory settings are not a verdict of destiny.
They can explain where certain reactions come from, but they cannot justify all my choices or determine where I must go.
Scripture offers a deeper starting point: I am not a machine produced by accident and defined only by my past.
I am a person made in God’s image, with dignity, relationality, responsibility, and the capacity to respond to God.
God created humankind in His image and declared all that He had made to be very good.
Genesis 1:27, 31.
But sin, broken relationships, suffering, and death also truly wound people, leaving minds, emotions, desires, and relationships in need of redemption and renewal.
True growth is not denying our settings, covering wounds, or forcing ourselves into perfection.
True growth is seeing ourselves clearly in God’s truth and grace, taking responsibility for today’s responses, and allowing the Holy Spirit to renew the whole life step by step.
1. Freud: Seeing Factory Settings and Inner Conflict
Freud’s important reminder is that the past does not automatically lose its influence merely because time passes.
Childhood attachment experiences, memories of neglect or shame, unexpressed emotions, and learned self-protective strategies may reappear in adult relationships in different forms.
Some fear abandonment and therefore people-please excessively; some fear being hurt and withdraw from intimacy; some suppress anger until it emerges as coldness, sarcasm, or an outburst.
These reactions need not be treated as the whole person, nor immediately labeled as “weakness” or “immaturity.”
They may once have been strategies formed to survive, avoid danger, or preserve relationships in a particular environment.
Freud also proposed the model of the id, ego, and superego.
The id can be understood as the impulsive dimension seeking immediate gratification, safety, and pleasure.
The superego can be understood as internalized standards, demands, moral commands, and the voice of “I must be this way.”
The ego attempts to mediate among impulses, reality, relationships, and internal standards.
This model can help me ask diagnostic questions rather than rush to condemn myself.
Is my present reaction arising from a real need, fear, people-pleasing, a wound-based defense, or excessively harsh self-demands?
Have I mistaken the voices of parents, authority figures, or past critics for God’s voice toward me?
Scripture invites people not to evade their inner lives, but to be honestly examined before God.
The psalmist prays, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”
Psalm 139:23.
This is not self-analysis replacing God; it is bringing self-awareness before God and asking Him to reveal unseen ways and lead me in the everlasting way.
Psalm 139:24.
A Biblical Practice through a Freudian Lens
When I have intense emotions or repetitive reactions, I can pause and record the trigger.
I can ask: “What just happened? What am I afraid of losing? What do I long to receive? Where does my inner ‘must’ come from?”
I can also pray: “Lord, help me see whether this is present reality, or whether a past wound is reacting through me.”
2. Adler: Hold the Steering Wheel and Take Responsibility for Today’s Response
If “factory settings” represent the influence left by the past, then the “steering wheel” represents the space I still have in the present to respond, choose, and act.
Adlerian psychology emphasizes that people are goal-directed and highlights how people assign meaning to experience.
The past truly influences people, but it need not be life’s final verdict.
The past is neither something to dismiss nor a verdict that permanently rules out change.
It is life material I need to recognize, grieve, work through, and respond to anew.
I cannot choose what has already happened, but I can still choose whether to be honest today, seek help, establish boundaries, stop harming others, and faithfully take the next step.
Adler also values “community feeling,” meaning belonging, cooperation, contribution, and concern for others’ well-being in shared life.
This reminds me that growth is not only “How can I feel better?” but also “How can I become more honest, bounded, loving, and contributing in relationships?”
“Separation of tasks” can serve as a practical way to ask boundary-related questions.
My tasks include my choices, attitudes, words, actions, commitments, repentance, seeking help, and use of time.
Other people’s tasks include their reactions, feelings, opinions, and final decisions.
But Christian boundaries are not cold self-protection or an evasion of the responsibility to love one another.
Scripture says both, “Bear one another’s burdens,” and, “Each will have to bear his own load.”
Together, these verses teach that we should not be isolated under unbearable burdens, yet we also cannot hand our personal responsibility, repentance, and obedience to someone else.
A Biblical Practice through an Adlerian Lens
When facing relational pressure, I can first write down “What I can take responsibility for” and “What I cannot control.”
I can take responsibility for speaking honestly, respecting the other person, making clear requests, holding boundaries, and correcting my own mistakes.
I cannot control whether others understand me, like me, change, or immediately respond to my expectations.
I can speak truth in love while leaving the other person’s response in God’s hands.
3. Jung: Accept the Whole Vehicle, but Do Not Make Peace with Destruction
Jung reminds us that maturity is not merely eliminating flaws or constructing a perfect image, but moving toward a more truthful and integrated life.
He uses “shadow” to describe parts of personality that are not consciously acknowledged, are repressed, denied, or projected onto others.
In Jungian psychology, the shadow can initially refer to what ego-consciousness does not know about itself, including traits excluded because of shame, fear, or social norms.
The shadow may include destructive tendencies such as jealousy, revenge, control, pride, and self-deception.
The shadow may also include capacities that could be used well but were suppressed through fear, such as anger that reveals injustice, the ability to say no, courage, creativity, and healthy boundaries.
Facing the shadow is neither defending it nor allowing it to rule.
Facing the shadow means honestly admitting: “These tendencies are in me; I need to bring them into the light and receive truth, repentance, healing, and transformation.”
Scripture likewise rejects self-deception and calls people to live in the light.
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
The persona is the image we present while fulfilling roles in society.
It is not necessarily false in itself, because people do need to learn appropriate roles and responsibilities in work, family, church, and public life.
The problem is that if I am left only with one mask—for example, “the always strong person,” “the always perfect Christian,” or “the always unangry good person”—I may lose the ability to admit fatigue, pain, limitation, and the need for help.
Jung sees individuation as a movement toward a more whole self, including shedding false layers of persona and confronting repressed parts.
Christian faith can affirm the need for such honest integration, but adds that the center is not autonomous “self-realization,” but renewal by Christ—living as one made in God’s image and remade through the gospel.
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and the new has come.
A Biblical Practice through a Jungian Lens
I can notice traits in others that trigger an excessive reaction in me.
I can ask: “Does what I criticize so intensely also touch something I am unwilling to acknowledge in myself?”
I can also identify my role masks: “Do I feel worthy of acceptance only if I appear strong, competent, spiritual, or pleasing?”
God does not call me to pretend that I am flawless; He calls me to put away falsehood, speak truthfully to one another, and learn forgiveness in grace.
4. How the Gospel Redefines “Accepting Yourself”
Accepting oneself does not mean saying, “Every impulse, choice, and tendency I have right now is good.”
Nor does self-acceptance mean giving up change, refusing repentance, or denying harm done to others.
Gospel-shaped acceptance has a firmer foundation: God fully knows who I am—including my strengths, wounds, sin, confusion, and limitations—yet still extends grace to me in Christ.
God formed me in the womb; I am not a meaningless being who may be discarded.
Psalm 139:13–16.
God also knows all my ways, even words I have not yet spoken.
Psalm 139:1–4.
I do not need perfection to earn God’s love, nor should I use “This is just how I am” to refuse God’s renewal.
Those in Christ Jesus are not condemned, yet they are also called to walk according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1–4.
Therefore, a more mature form of self-acceptance can say this:
I acknowledge that I have wounds, but my wounds are not my entire identity.
I acknowledge that I sin, but sin is not the nature to which I must remain loyal.
I acknowledge that I am limited, but limitation does not strip me of dignity or worthiness to be loved.
I acknowledge that I need others, the church, professional help, and God’s grace.
5. An Integrated Path: Three Psychologists and Scripture
| Growth Step | Psychological Insight | Biblical Correction and Direction | Practical Practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| See factory settings | Freud: unresolved experiences and inner conflict may affect present reactions | God searches the heart; awareness is not self-condemnation but a path toward truth | Record triggers, emotions, habitual responses, underlying fears, and needs |
| Hold the steering wheel | Adler: people can assign new meaning and choose the next step | People are responsible for their actions and bear one another’s burdens in community | Distinguish “what I can own” from “what I cannot control,” then take one faithful action |
| Accept the whole vehicle | Jung: face shadow and persona to move toward a more integrated self | Confess sin and limitations, live in the light, and be renewed through Christ | Name one avoided tendency, pray about it, and speak honestly with a trusted person |
| Walk in love | Adler’s community feeling | The church is Christ’s body, in which believers build one another up | Find a mature believer, pastor, or qualified professional and build a safe support relationship |
| Continue renewal | Integration is not a one-time event but repeated awareness and adjustment | The Spirit continually renews the mind and life | Review weekly: Where did I live in fear? Where did I live in trust? |
6. A Seven-Day Devotional and Self-Awareness Plan
Day 1: Review one event that triggered a strong reaction; write down the event, emotions, bodily sensations, and the first thought that arose.
Day 2: Ask whether this reaction may connect to a past fear, loss, shame, or protective strategy.
Day 3: Pray Psalm 139:23–24, asking God to reveal ways in you that you have not seen.
Day 4: Write two columns: “This is my responsibility” and “This is not within my control,” then take one specific action for the first column.
Day 5: Identify one mask you often wear, such as “I must always be strong” or “I must not disappoint anyone.”
Day 6: Admit one shadow tendency before God, such as jealousy, control, people-pleasing, indifference, bitterness, or avoidance.
Day 7: Choose one trustworthy person, share one new response you are learning, and ask for prayer or honest feedback.
Conclusion: Driving in Grace, Not Running in Shame
Freud reminds me to see the past and inner conflict clearly.
Adler reminds me not to turn the past into life’s verdict, but to take responsibility for responses I can choose today.
Jung reminds me not to love only my bright side, but to face shadow, roles, and repressed parts honestly.
Scripture brings this path into deeper gospel hope: I am not saved by analyzing myself, nor do I earn acceptance by constructing a perfect personality.
In Christ, I am known, loved, forgiven, and continually renewed by God.
Therefore, I can see my factory settings clearly without being imprisoned by them.
I can hold the steering wheel without pretending that I control everything.
I can accept the whole vehicle without giving up maintenance, healing, repentance, and forward movement.
I can carry my imperfect self forward in God’s grace, truth, and community, moving toward the new life He promises.
