Scripture: 1 Kings 21:5–16
This passage exposes a particularly dangerous form of injustice: Jezebel does not openly announce, “I will murder Naboth.” Instead, she uses the king’s name, a religious fast, elders and nobles, two witnesses, and a public trial to produce what appears to be a lawful killing.
She preserves the appearance of procedure while violating the law’s purpose; she uses the language of law while destroying the truth, justice, and life that the law was meant to protect.
The Reversal Within the Passage
Jezebel first writes letters in Ahab’s name and seals them with the royal seal, thereby packaging private covetousness as a command of the state.
She also proclaims a fast, which should have been a religious act of humility, repentance, and seeking truth before God, but she uses it as a stage for creating urgency and moral legitimacy.
She seats Naboth in a prominent place among the people, making it appear that he is being publicly examined; then she arranges for two “worthless men” to testify falsely that he has “cursed God and the king.”
Mosaic law required two or three witnesses in capital cases in order to prevent hasty conviction on a single accusation; Jezebel deliberately supplies two false witnesses so that Naboth’s killing appears procedurally valid.[1][2]
The law also forbade false testimony and required a malicious witness to receive the punishment intended for the innocent person; Jezebel and her accomplices completely reversed this principle meant to protect truth.[3][4]
Therefore, this is not a lawful trial but a sham trial with a predetermined verdict: procedure is retained while truth is excluded; religious ritual is retained while reverence for God is discarded; legal language is retained while justice and mercy are killed.
How Jezebel’s Sin Takes Shape
Jezebel’s first sin is treating power as a tool for satisfying private desire.
She asks Ahab, “Do you now govern Israel?” Her point is not to remind the king to govern by God’s justice, but to mock him for failing to use power to seize what he wants.
In Jezebel’s worldview, authority is not a trust for service and protection, but a weapon that enables a person to obtain whatever he or she wants.
Her second sin is treating people as obstacles that may be sacrificed.
Naboth is not a person with dignity, family, conscience, and responsibility before God; in Jezebel’s eyes, he is merely a stone blocking the royal plan.
When people reduce others to “a nuisance,” “an obstacle,” “an uncooperative person,” or “a risk to be managed,” injustice can easily be rationalized.
Her third sin is masking evil purposes with holy language.
Fasting, God, king, witnesses, elders, and the assembly should all have pointed toward communal reverence for God, discernment of truth, and pursuit of justice.
Jezebel turns these very elements into props for framing an innocent person.
This is sin at its most deceptive: it does not always appear obviously evil; it may wear the clothing of order, morality, piety, professionalism, compliance, or “the greater good.”
Jezebel-Like Injustice Today
Modern society may not stone people to death, but “using legitimate forms to do illegitimate things” remains common.
For example, an organization may have a complaint procedure but investigate only those inconvenient to itself; it may have compliance systems but use them to suppress those who raise concerns; it may use performance reviews with vague criteria to punish employees who refuse to falsify work.
In a church or religious community, someone may use “do not judge,” “submit to leaders,” or “do not disrupt unity” to silence victims or prevent a community from investigating harm and abuse of power.
In public discussion, people may first attach labels such as “disloyal,” “immoral,” “unprofessional,” or “disruptive,” and then use systems or group pressure to exclude dissenting voices.
This does not mean that every rule, investigation, disciplinary process, or authoritative decision is evil.
The crucial questions of discernment are: Does the process sincerely seek facts? Does the accused have a fair chance to respond? Can evidence be tested? Is power accountable? Are the vulnerable protected?
How to Keep Ourselves From Jezebel’s Sin
1. Examine Motives: Am I Seeking Justice or Protecting My Interests?
Jezebel does not act from genuine concern that God has been blasphemed or royal authority violated; her true motive is to obtain the vineyard.
When we face conflict, we should first ask honestly: Have I already decided the conclusion I want, then looked for reasons and processes to support it?
If the conclusion has already been predetermined, any system can be used by us as a weapon.
2. Refuse to Reduce People to Labels and Tools
In Jezebel’s plan, Naboth is portrayed as a man guilty of a great crime, but readers know that he is actually a righteous man who guards God’s law.
Today, we too may be too quick to define others with labels such as “troublemaker,” “disobedient,” “unprofessional,” or “disloyal.”
Before judging, we should ask: Have I heard the other person fully? Have I treated their dignity, circumstances, and legitimate boundaries as important?
Justice never reduces people to case numbers; it recognizes that each person is made in God’s image.
3. Let Truth Come Before Image and Efficiency
Jezebel seeks not facts, but royal image, power control, and quick results.
Today, we may also suppress truth to preserve a team’s reputation, a church’s image, a company’s interest, or a family’s face.
But if peace must be maintained by lies, it is not true peace.
If unity must be maintained by silencing victims, it is not true unity.
If efficiency requires sacrificing innocent people, it is not true efficiency.
4. Do Not Abuse Spiritual or Institutional Language
Do not use “submission,” “unity,” “forgiveness,” “do not judge,” or “the greater good” to evade truth and responsibility.
Likewise, do not use “procedure,” “confidentiality,” “policy,” “risk management,” or “professional requirements” as shields to hide injustice.
These words can be good in themselves; the question is whether they are used to serve truth and protect people, or to protect power and conceal harm.
5. Be Willing to Accept Examination and Accountability
A Jezebel-like mentality fears transparency because it needs to control the narrative, evidence, and people.
A pure heart is willing to ask: “If I am wrong, am I willing to admit it? If evidence does not support me, am I willing to adjust? If the vulnerable reveal my blind spots, am I willing to listen?”
Willingness to be examined does not weaken legitimate authority; it makes authority more trustworthy.
Facing “Jezebels” in Society
When facing people who abuse procedure, distort truth, or use moral language to oppress others, Christians should not answer with the same manipulation, lies, or hatred.
We need courage, but courage is not recklessness; we need firmness, but firmness is not the loss of love.
We can respond according to these principles:
Verify facts; do not rush to accept the narrative supplied by power. -
Keep records so that the matter does not rest only on memory, emotion, or one-sided claims. -
Discern whether a procedure is genuinely fair, not merely whether it looks formal. -
Protect those being silenced, especially people with little voice, few resources, or little security. -
Seek trustworthy third parties and legitimate channels, such as mature leaders, compliance teams, professionals, legal support, or safeguarding mechanisms. -
Refuse to participate in false testimony, smears, online shaming, selective editing, or spreading unverified accusations. -
Entrust ultimate judgment to God while practicing truth and justice within the sphere for which you are responsible.
Naboth’s story does not offer a cheap promise that righteous people will always be immediately protected by institutions.
Rather, it honestly tells us that institutions can become corrupt, crowds can be manipulated, religious language can be abused, and righteous people can be misunderstood and harmed.
But the story does not end with Jezebel’s victory; God next sends Elijah to pronounce judgment, showing that God sees concealed truth and will not forever permit power to commit injustice in the name of justice.
Reflection and Prayer
Have I ever first decided the outcome I wanted and then looked for reasons, procedures, or spiritual language to support myself?
Have I ignored truth and someone’s dignity in order to preserve my face, power, interests, group image, or efficiency?
Have I ever used silence, labels, insinuation, selective information, or incomplete accounts to cause others to be treated unfairly?
When I see Jezebel-like injustice, do I merely feel anger, or am I willing to respond with truth, wisdom, appropriate procedure, and action that protects the vulnerable?
Lord, purify my motives so that I do not use truth, institutions, spiritual language, or power as tools to satisfy selfish desire.
Help me love truth more than my image, justice more than convenience, and people more than control.
When I face injustice, give me courage not to participate in false testimony, and give me wisdom to stand in ways that are appropriate, truthful, and protective of people.
May You keep me from becoming part of Jezebel-like injustice, and instead make me a person who upholds truth, mercy, and justice amid confusion.
